I've recently bought a 2002 rm 250 and was rebuilding it. I put a new top end in it, all new gaskets, etc. I goto start it and it will rev up on its own and drop back down. It will consistently do this to the point you can't ride it. I've checked the throttle cable, checked for any air leaks, it acts like just for a second the timing advances and the goes back to normal. I've gotten a new stator and coil, still does it, replaced almost everything except the cdi box. I've read about the rm requires a special plug, it has it in it now but when i got it it didn't. Could the wrong plug have messed something up? Any help would be much appreciated.

Its impossible for it to rev up or gain rpm without adding fuel... i would bet you have an issue with the carb, slide, needle, return spring or the cable. Pull the throttle assembly off the bars and bolt it together loosely..give it a twist and listen for the slide to snap back. Iv'e seen cables just routed the wrong way cause that problem. If it still does it with the tube off the bars pull the carb out so you can watch the slide and try again.

I've tried that as well as new carb kit and new cable, also even took a carb off a known good working bike and it does the exact same thing, still revs on its own.

What kind of rev..like somebody's giving it 1/4-1/2 throttle or just a hanging or high idle?

It jumps from idle to about 4 or 5 grand then drops back down within a second or two, then will idle for a couple seconds and do it again. It doesn't stay revved up when it revs up like a vacuum or air leak.

If you pulled the complete carb cable and tube from a good running bike and that didn't fix it I would think you definitely have an airleak

Alright, could it possibly be the crank seals?

Or base gasket or reed cage..do some googling there is something you can spray around the motor while it's running to see if it revs up more..I wanna say carb cleaner..maybe someone can chime in on that

I use starter fluid to look for airleaks.

2.50 a can at walmart.

It is strange the revs rise then fall. Check the crank seal behind the flywheel that it is seated.

I wish my bike would rev on its own. Sounds pretty cool...
