Who posted that pic of Hannah jumping the triple in practice in 86 at the coliseum? Nowhere before had I heard that he had jumped it. It really wouldve changed a lot of opinion of Hannahs last years if it was known that he didnt refuse that triple out of lack of balls, but rather because of the condition of the track. Hannah was my hero and i was always bothered by my mental image of him not jumping that triple out of just fear.
Hannah did attempt said "triple" (I just remember the leap being a l o n g double, I could be wrong) for a couple of laps, he had to, to be relevant. His last attempt damn near put him in the hospital, scared the shit out of him.
He was a spokesman for "safe and sane" obstacles after that, many times being very critical of unnecessary track conditions. Anyways, that's how I remember it going down. Feel free to correct me if need be.
The Shop
"The 1983 honor roll of riders who had etched their names in moto history included Jeff Ward (125), Phil Larson (500), Eric Eaton (500), Goat Breker (500), Broc Glover (500), Warren Reid (500), Danny Chandler (500), Billy Liles (250), Bob Hannah (250), Ricky Johnson (250), Mike Bell (250) and Tom Carson (250). Only 12 riders cleared the jump out of the 160 riders entered that day. Many others claimed to have jumped it (and many did jump high up into the face), and a few may have squeaked over, but most of the claims are based on the fact that every rider jumped, but only a handful made it over the top."
Anyone that jumped this was not afraid to jump.
It's defined by overcoming the fear that you have.
He didn't sign up originally to be jumping huge death defying jumps. His greatest attribute was twisting the throttle harder and later than anybody else in rough, whooped out ground.
Its probably why he never wanted much to do with the sport afterwards...
Well, at least he redeemed himself the next year with a moto win at Southwick over RJ and a 125 ride at the MX des Nations at Unadilla.
Pit Row
If my memory serves me correct RJ crashed the first lap and Cooper led most of the race until RJ passed him with a 1/2 lap to go.
Real Heartbreaker for Coop. Was that the same year?
