Listened to the Santa Clara podcast, lots of talk about format and the lack of buck-banging entertainment. I think about championship formats a lot while spending time with my family, and so far this is my favorite “brainvention” LoL. It’s pretty rough-draft, the numbers were pulled more or less out of my ass and some may not even add up. Tweaks will be considered.

I'll spare you a detailed breakdown of the pre-main event festivities; you still end up with 22 (or 20) riders in the end, so who gives a fuckfest. Gist is, 10 fastest in timed Q get to go straight to the first main, and no semis, but really, I mean, I don't think the current format is offending too many people.

However, for the record, I'm with the crowd saying only show recaps of the heats on the broadcast and only mention LCQ/semi 'winners', unless something really dope happens. Keep it sweet for newbies. This is where the shit heats up, anyway: I call it the R.A.D. system. Yes, it's an acronym, the meaning of which will be decided later and applied retroactively.

Would you prefer something like this to a chase system? Let me know in the comments below! If you can at all help yourself, don’t completely ignore this post and start spouting your own original format ideas all over the place as though there aren’t 12,000 existing threads where they’re already documented. The format below is the topic. So check it.

Moto 1 (10 laps): 20 riders, top 8 move on to moto 2, bottom 12 go to net race.
Points: 1st (20), 2nd (18), 3rd (17), 4 (16), 5 (15), 6 (14), 7 (13), 8 (12), 9 (11), 10 (10), 11 (9), 12 (8), 13 (7), 14 (6), 15 (5), 16 (4), 17 (3), 18 (2), 19 (1), 20 (0)

Net race (5 laps): 12 riders, top 4 qualify for moto 2. No points awarded.

Moto 2 (10 laps): 12 riders, top 5 move on to moto 2, bottom 7 go to net race.
Points: 1st (5), 2nd (4), 3rd (3), 4(2), 5(1)

Net race (5 laps): 7 riders, winner qualifies for moto 3. No points awarded.

Moto 3 (10 laps): 6 riders, final race.
Points: 1st (5), 2nd (3), 3rd (2), 4th (1), 5th (0)

And hey, how about 13 rounds? I like that number for some reason. 12 out, 13 in. Kinda Vegas-y, too. Damn, I just violated my own rule. Couldn't help myself.

20 rider gates in the mains is perfect. The extra two guys aren't necessary. There are too many crashes at the start.
I would even go so far as to suggest 18 on the gate for the main. Give the points for 19th and 20th to the best finishers who don't transfer from the LCQ.

It's a bit Jeremy McGrath invitational, maybe. Anyone remember any race formats from that? Anything interesting, or just some 1 v. 1?
