I couple buddies of mine are thinking about racing a 24 hour race and obviously would need a good light on the front. What have you guys done to be able to see at night. I was thinking maybe there is a really good LED out there that we could just use batteries with.

Instead of putting a light on the bike they have some really good lights that mount on your helmet, the duel side mount light system looked like the best, I saw them on dirt rider if you want to search their site.

Depending on the track or trails you will be racing on,you might need more light than a helmet light can afford.
I have done some night stuff and the more you can see the faster you can go safely,it's a blast racing at night.
Check this out, pricey but you will be able to see what you don't want to run into. Woohoo

On the rules page it says you "must have a headlight". Do they count helmet lights as a headlight?

I've never seen a 14 foot YZ250F (is it hard to ride?)
Did you mean a '14 YZ250F?

You could probably find some handlebar-mounted bicycle lights that would do the job just fine for you. NiteRider makes some pretty darn high-lumen lights that you could just strap to your bars and have more than enough light. Then, after the race, take them off and sell them to a mountain biker for $50 less than what you paid. Combine the handlebar light with a helmet-mounted system and you'll be all set!

Feel free to shoot me an email and I'll give you a couple ideas. I ran the 24hr Perry Mtn race a few years back in the Duo class with the guys putting this 24hr race on... We had a cool setup that worked well without hard wiring to the bike and what not. And plan on doing the same thing for this one too!

I'd get a Cyclops helmet light.

As far as a headlight, pretty simple to set one up to run off a battery.

The more light you have, the better, but if it's mostly single track/quad type trails you won't need as much light as you would if its a faster GP style course.

Used to run some epic 24 hour races in Washington. Riding at night is an absolute blast!

I've done the Perry Mountain 24 a few times and used a bike light and my two helmet lights, it's the way to go. In most cases it was better than day riding to me. Also helps to have a red light for the rear of your bike. If you do try the bicycle lights pre test them good.

I'll be there in the duo class, under the name "Team Coors Original"

I'm going to run an Acerbis headlight with an LED helmet setup.

I don't get the itch to ride too much these days, but I'm jealous of you boys! 24 hour races are FUN stuff, period.

Have fun and be safe!

Reminds me of a time at a 24 hour in Washington, I had a KTM that the headlight only worked when it was running. For some reason, my helmet light had died (came unplugged if I remember right, started taping the connections after that) so i was going just off the bike light. Got a little sideways in a higher speed section and lost it on a root I didn't see, bike tumbled through the trees and died. It was about 3am and pitch black, I had to wait for another bike to come so I could have them shine their light to find my bike! Good times!

I entered an enduro in Wicklow once & fitted a bicycle light to the crossbar & a small red light to rear mudguard both wired to a 9 volt battrey in the air box with an on/off switch in the hand lift place under the seat. On scrutineering my bike failed as it was not considered to be a "headlight". Fortunately someone had an "Acerbis headlight" cost me £80 twice the retail price of £40 = $59 . It was either that or not riding that day. E-mail or ring the organising club to make sure.
