My girlfriend and I are having a debate about calories burned in motocross vs horseback riding.

She has pulled up info from some hack fitness site that shows Moto burns 247 calories/hour while horse back at a canter burns 540/hour.

Now, having done both I know this is absolute bs.

I did a search last night and all I had come up with were the same crappy sites along with some that listed "motorcross" and motorcycle riding.

I thought I would see if any of you have information substantiating what we all know as fact that I can use to prove my point.

Please include a link if possible.

Not sure of the actual calorific burning amounts but would imagine MX to be a much much higher rate than horse riding!

In the broadcast Langston did actually mention that MX riders were deemed to be the fittest all round athletes of ALL SPORTS. That I could well believe, especially when you see such crashes as McElrath and Savatgy have recenly had and they somehow withstand the impacts and still walk away. Have also heard MX being compared to boxing and the intensity that has, i.e constantly moving, taking a pounding, no let up etc.

Best wishes to Shane also on his recovery and he is one tough cooky for sure taking a massive hit like that and then getting back on his feet, albeit banged up. Rooting for Shane when he returns, he was riding great in that last moto and really trying hard it seemed.

There are so many variables that it is impossible to give a number that applies "in general". Ryan Dungey in an interview recently said he is burning about 750 calories a moto which is about 35 minutes but I would imagine that the elite pros are burning at much higher rates than your average amateur.

Wow, 750 a moto, did not know that.

Also these links maybe interesting :

Racer X fitness article

MX fitness feature

Don't think these links go into calories burned so much though, still interesting though- sort of more about heart rates/ cardio fitness levels and actually how super fit MX riders have to be.

Way to many variables to get an accurate number..

Rider fitness bike size track roughness bike suspensiom setup riders style and other items factor in.

A smooth rider like RD is going to burn less than a rider at the same level that is riding the bike at the limits of control fighting the bike all the time like BamBam does

I'm a 53 year old vet rider. I wore my heart rate monitor all last season, and it was consistently showing that I burned 200-250 calories for a 5 lap moto, including the the 5 minutes or so sitting at the gate. On the track my heart rate stayed in the 170s for most of the motos, occasionally hitting 180. The 200-250 calorie recording took an an average of 15-17 minutes. If I could sustain it for 60 minutes of race-speed riding (which of course I can't), it would easily be 1000 calories per hour.

My Garmin gives me 850-1000cal from normal Vet race 15min qual and two 20min motos. Its around hour together with waiting on starting gate/sighting laps. Heart rate 80-100% from max. 2 hour CC race been +1500.

When wear my HR monitor it will usually say about 500 cal per 20 min moto. My avg hr is around 180 and I'll peak around 210ish on a good ride.

I am nowhere near in shape, and would be curious to see how accurate the kcal estimate is based of HR compared to something like cycling or running. I'm sure adrenaline throws the real number off for MX.

I have a Polar HRM. When I wore it riding it recorded about 1000 calories per hour or something crazy like that. I'll dig out my records.

I've run a heart rate monitor in quite a few hare scrambles over the years and I burn around 1800 to maybe 2300 calories in a 2 hr race. So I personally probably average right around 1000 calories per hour while racing.

How would you even burn calories riding a horse? You just sit there and the horse does all the work.

Seems like alot of people are around the 1000 plus even per hour mark thereabouts- presume they are probably also fairly good riders.

Saw using Concept rowing machines/ gym equipment people were sort of hitting quite high rates but seems MX riders are even quite alot higher still from what I read here and on the interweb. Those Concept rowers are wreckers for sure.

Seems I deleted those records. I remember it being up around 1000 for me. I also remember thinking at the time that it was a crazy, badass figure when you compare it to running on a inclined treadmill which was a fraction of that number.

You sure it's not the horse that's burning 540 an hour?

Yes- they do seem crazy high (but totally believeable) and also the heart rate figures to me are even more astonishing.

Its odd, I did 10,000m on a Concept Rower in 45mins odd and compared it to when I raced, thought the rower actually killed me alot more maybe than the racing did, yet I probably burnt more Cals/ hit higher heart rates racing!

I guess it is a sort of different intensity and there are differences that need to be taken into account when comparing the two pursuits.
