From Stewart and Villopoto down to the privateers? Like the ones who roll around the track during the main.

Privateers dont make SHIT. But the "privateers" that make the mains can make some decent money. But peoples definition of privateer has changed over the years. The top factory guys make a lot, as they should. I just feel it should be spread out more than it is. How that is done, I am not nearly smart enough for that (well, to make it fair anyways). I am a believer that the riders factory and privateer would benefit greatly from forming a union. At least then they could have somewhat of a united voice.

JS made 10 million in 2009 but w/ the economy now its a lot less. Probably between 1-3 million w/ JGR

Dungey with ktm. I think it is a 5 million 2 year deal so 2.5 per year.

RV I heard made 7 million w/ both championships and w/ Monster cup.

Windham I can see making $250+ a year easily

It was calculated before that if a privateer got 20th in all the SX and MX races. He would make almost $100k just from purse money. Hopefully his team pays for all of the bikes/fee's or he won't see a 1/4 of that money.

A "true" privateer wouldn't even be on a team, so he'd be lucky to break even each week if he got 20th each week. It's all about sponsorship in this sport.

The current structure is unsustainable. OK, it's great that the top 5 make $1million plus but you need at least 40 guys for the night show? Everyone who makes the night show should be able to make a decent living, surely?

From what I have been told if you finish around 6th or 7th in the LCQ of the 450 class then you get around $900 bucks for the night. In the lites its much less, $100 maybe at the most.

Making the night program is a pretty big deal, you are a fast mofo for sure! Should be paid a bit more.

Every guy in the 450 main should pull at least 100k per year. Something is very wrong if they don't. 17 sold out stadiums with 50,000 fans at each is a train load of cash. Sure they get the mega dollar bikes for free, the gear for free, and the chics for free but you still have to pay the rent. Something has to change. The top 5 make millions and the bottom 10 could qualify for obama care yet they line them up on the same gate and people wonder why we don't have shit for racing for the top spot. Im not going to compare it to other motorsports but mx/sx is the only high level sport that is like this that I know of.

The Lites riders should make around 20k. Incentive to move to the premier class to further improve the racing.

20th in main SX class times 16 races, do the math. SX payout from last year. I don't think 100K for those just making the show.

Isn't it 17 races?

Anyways that about $35k for SX. Whats outdoors, I can't find it? Anyways probably close to the same.

So that's $70k without bike brand money. Add that they got October, November, and December to do local races.

$100k+ gross is possible for a 20th place pro

for a true privateer that makes mains, no free bikes or travel expenses, I'm fairly confident they lose money. The gap from what 5th makes to what 15th makes is disgusting.

On Pulpmx it was said that when Motosport Outlet had their Kawasaki team a while back, Chisolm had a salary in the lites for over $100K. The times have changed drastically since then and I bet even with his new ride he is probably in the $50-$70K range with a lot of incentives

Are there more bikes given to amateurs than pros?

How much are the top amateurs knocking down compared to a top 20 pro?

This question needs to be more specific.

Are you talking salary?

Are you talking with bonus?

Are you talking with gear sponsorship?

are you talking with purse money?

Bubba, Dunge, and Villo - 7 figure in salary alone

The rest of the top ten would average in the low 6 figures these days. Then it falls off dramatically. Most on teams whether satellite or private, are making in the neighborhood of 30-60k. The fortunate ones have contingency in their contract from a factory for top 10 bonuses and those can be VERY lucrative.

And there are also quite a few "pay to play" riders. Either they have a benefactor or there is a gear sponsor out there who buys there way onto the team. This is very common in all motorsports. If a rider can bring a sponsor with him, its a great way to secure a spot on a team and that teams patience in letting you learn the ropes.

Gear sponsorship can really boost a guys bottom line. Guys like Metty, Weimer, Short, and of that sort command a pretty penny believe it or not.

And the real big myth is that the purse money isnt good. Which is completely false. It may not be what it should be, and the fact that pro's pay to race seems backwards, but the money is good. It adds up at the end of the year.

For the guys out there with the 30-60k a year salarys, their salarys barely cover all the track time necessary, gym work, eating right, gas and rent. But their bikes are shipped to the races and they have their race expenses covered. And then if they can consistently finish in the top 10, they can easily get their income into the 6 figures by the end of the SX/MX season.
