Discovered in a friends bike. I'm not a XR guy and I really don't want to post over at bonertalk.

Any ideas what the source may be?

Edit: thread title spelling *shavings

P.S Guyb, how do we edit the the thread title???

What oil was in it, and how long since last oil change ?
Are you sure it's brass ?

I can contact the XR650 guru, and ask.

I'm thinking worn thrust bearings and crank, eh?

The top end and valve train were recently rebuilt. There oil was changed during that same period as the motor was being rebuilt. Dude has one ride on it!!

I would think a bearing also, since you say it's brass. That's pretty uncommon, XRs run forever.

ya, i know its the oil filter. Did you notice the brass flakes on the element?

And no, he pulled the element out post filter removal. Can't you see Mohammad's box cutter on the right?

That's a shit-load of shavings, Rudy.

Looks like a bushing disintegrated.

As I enlarge it I see the little shavings.
I could make the call, but maybe your friend should call so he has the word first hand.

Have him call Precision concepts racing (877) 976-3486
Talk to Bob Bell... Bob is real patient, and will surely know what's wrong.

Open it up before it causes more damage.

Budget a new oil pump too.

Ya, definitely going to investigate/teardown.

Just wondering, is it possible that the stator unwound?

That's a pretty simple check...The fly wheel nut could have come loose.

Was your friend able to make a call to Bob Bell ?

He was going to check tonight and report back.

Wanted me to pass on that he appreciates the feedback.

I'm sure he'll be given your friend a call sometime next week.

Wondering if we can take the task on ourselves. Splitting cases is one of the only tasks that I have never done before. Maybe just do the teardown and then hand off the rebuild to shop personnel, that way he can keep the labor cost down. Any ideas?

You can pull the ignition cover, and right side case off, and inspect. If you see nothing unusual, pop them back on, then pull the engine out of the frame and drop it off, to your chosen repairman.

I do have a Supercross Mechanic, that works on the side here in Capo. if you wish to save a few bucks...But you would have to wait until the 250s go East.

Bob Bell, (Precision Concepts) is the guy that built all of Johnny Campbell's winning Hondas, for the last 12 years. He may be a bit pricey, but nothing less than perfect

with out a comeplete engine rebulid you could always pull the clutch side cover off and see what crap has collected in the bottom. but seems to me that a tear down is in order either way you go . i would put my money on crank bearings are going bad or have gone bad. if the bike still runs put the engine under a load ( 1st gear clutch in back brake all the way down and try to move the bike you dont need to rev it to the moon just above idle will and let out on the clutch and see what happends.) you may get a knocking sound and also a swirling sound. that would indate bad crank bearings and or top end. a pinging sound will most likely be top end related. what kind of oil are you useing? does an xr of that size have an oil screen? if so i think i would be on the stator side. i would think dont hold me to it.

At this point, he's basically accepted the bearing issue but still wants to check to see if for some weird reason the stator unwound. I just texted him earlier today. He's been really busy and hasn't cracked a the case yet to see if it was the stator winding. Thanks for checking brah.

wllsvk, thanks for the advice. Analytical teardown will commence when he has time. Photos and detailed report to follow. May contact slowpro's friend on the rebuild.

don't think they use thrust washers on the crank on that motor.
