Saying that any team "LOST"... If a team finished 2nd, they didn't LOSE...they finished 2nd and in front of a lot of other teams.
I hate that when these idiots say that a rider loses when he doesn't get first.

In stick and ball sports, teams "lose" because it's just them against another team. In the Red Bull race, a ride will lose, because it's just 2 racers going head to head..... when you have 40 guys on the line and you finish 5th....you didn't lose shit! You beat 34 other riders!

I was thinking the same thing the other night.

You hear that Team USA 'lost' the MXdN a lot, but as far as Im concerned while one team can win it, the other teams don't lose it.

So, give everyone a trophy just for showing up, and don't keep score, then?

For those who beleive that only victory counts, even a 2nd place is for sure a loss.

Hey, your family will always think you're a WINNER! Well, maybe not all of them, but you get my point.

Who said anything about calling them a 'winner'?
So in a race, is there 1 winner and 39 losers and some of them are just bigger losers than others?

Yes.

That said, you can be happy with a hard fought 2nd or 5th or whatever.

I totally get the gist of this thread; however.. Nobody remembers second place. Also, the expectations are a little higher for certain countries like Team USA than for a lot of other nations.

Think DeCoster is consoling the team and congratulating them on who they did beat and for trying their best?? Doubt it..

American's clearly expected the riders to win.

This sounds like another excuse thread.

Where are any excuses in this thread?

USA went and did their best. They should hold their heads high. They beat a lot of good teams....

In the Olympics do they say the 2nd place finisher lost...or did they "WIN THE SILVER"!?

Quitting may make you a quitter, but losing a race doesn't make you a loser.

Just a reminder, Team usa tied for 4th or 3rd depending how you look at it.

Nobody including them expected to be tied for 3rd.....it was a let down for sure.

Especially from the standpoint that France and Germany didn't have their best guys there.

I totally agree, but would change it to say.....

"Quitting may make you a quitter, but NOT WINNING a race doesn't make you a loser."

Come on Huck, you would be the first one rubbing Euro fans' face in it if we did win.

Nope...besides, as I said before the MXoN...I am very patriotic (and put my support where it matters) but I don't get all excited for the MXoN. It's just a silly exhibition MX race.

Dictionary.com

Loser: noun
1) a person, team, nation etc. that loses.
"The visiting team was the loser in the series"

Winner: noun
1) a person or thing that wins, victor.

This kinda helps clear it all up

This thread makes me embarrassed to be an American. tUSA loses the MXdN and some American fans have to redefine what it means to lose in order to cope.

"We didn't actually lose, we are all winners in my heart!"

No one has an issue with saying who won or lost a race, get real. Ninety percent of the people throwing "loser" around aren't doing it as a neutral description of results, but mean it as a snarky insult. Because, you know, that makes you seem clever. Muddling the difference between the two for the sake of a pissant fight is just slightly less idiotic.
