I was given this 80 xs650 special several weeks ago. After chasing the rats out of the air box and pressure washing all the mud dobber nests off I've been hell bent on trying to clean up the carbs. Floats were seized and leaking, throttle body seized and rebuild parts ordered while much of it sits in a carb dip bath.
I'm not sure what I want out of it yet, but there's a chance she'll be running this coming weekend. Just 18k miles on her and Compression checks out at 150lbs dead on with both cylinders.
Once I get her through a check out run I'll decide what direction I take the build. It's all there and I could put her back as a Special with some love, but those specials were the ugliest of the XS line IMHO. I'll most likely keep it simple, put some normal bars, a flat seat and clean up the crap on it for a simpler cafe look. That 16" rear won't help the scrambler or a street tracker look, but those are most likely what the end result will be. But that would probably come in another season.

After 10 years of shed storage She lives! And I'm amazed how well also- after all that solder I had to pile on to those leaking carb floats I thought it would be a sync nightmare. But she fired up with one simple crank and carb seems spot on. I'm thinking she may shed her "Special" attire to build to a DT1 650

Picked this clunker up to redo over the winter so the wife will have something to ride at the dunes. Do a complete restore, plan on stock plastics and graphic look with powder coated frame and engine and Hubs in red w a center mount exhaust, led lights and 330 motor... Should look sharp and haul her around w no problems.

Im Doing a new top end, but I'm so poor it might take a few months. At least it will be clean when it's back together, and most likely no longer winter so time to ride. Ohh and new grips!!!

I bagged going the DT1 route, think I'll drop her a few inches bung on this tank and chop up the couch.

I'm going to be putting the upgraded gas tank and shrouds on my 01 yz 250. I have been toying with the idea of putting a modern subframe on it to have all the modern plastic but I don't have a welder so that could cost me a lot of money to have someone else do the work.

Are you talking about putting an 02' and up gas tank and shrouds on it? If so, they will sit too high on the earlier frame and the shrouds won't line up with the radiator mounts.

You can make it work. I trimmed down the rubber part that sits under the tank and am going to be making brackets like the ones in this picture but it has been done before. You have to make extensions for the radiator mounts too.
