I think there was a time many, many years ago, pre-internet where the win on Sunday sell on Monday mantra rang true. Not so much anymore. You hit the nail on the head with Suzuki during those years. Perfect example. I didn't know anyone who ran out to buy a Suzuki just because Ricky was winning on one. BUT, that being said, KTM certainly has made it big by hiring top riders in a variety of off-road disciplines around the world over the years and that seems to be working out well.
Marketing is still a huge influence. Harley Davidson could take dog poop, stamp into into a HD logo and have people lined up to buy it.
I also find online forums are a huge influence on how people decide on what they are going buy, along with online reviews etc.

All I ever used to see at the track was Honda's and Yamaha's with a few Kawi's here and there. Now it seems, there is an even mix of KTM, Yamaha's, Suzuki's (yes Suzuki's), and Kawi's with only very few Honda's. Maybe that was just the AZ market and we don't have good Honda dealerships.... I think it comes down to price (you can get a lot of bang for your buck with Suzuki right now), and value - the KTM's are high price but really nice bikes, the Yamaha's are super nice (especially the YZ250Fs) after making some of the recent changes, and Kawi's just a solid overall bike platform. Not sure what Honda is bringing these days. I think the old Ride-Red crew are loyal to them, but that's about it. I know the shop I take my bike to doesn't have much good to say about the current Honda's. And for the record, I have owned 5 Honda's in the last 10 years. I have 2 Zook's and a KTM in my garage at the moment.

Getting back to the OP, I don't think the win on Sunday, sell on Monday applies much anymore. JMHO

That was a time before all the sweet advanced shootouts that 14 mags put out. Now we see they're all great.

I don't think RC's dominance sold his salary in RMZ450s in 2005/6/7. Which was the hope for Suzuki when he was signed.

And no one I know is going to buy a bike because Stewart rides one at this point. But his results on the new YZ450 torpedoed that bikes reputation in 2010/11/12, that Yamaha is only recovering from because of the results of the Star Racing team and Romain Febvre's results.

KTM has seen a massive improvement of their brands perception and bike sales because of the success their factory teams and Ryan Dungey has had over the past five years. I would have never contemplated buying a KTM before 2012, now it's at the top of my list.

Honda used the win on Sunday sell on Monday from the early 80s to the mid 90s and then they kept selling and selling. I don't think they have seen a massive lose in sales. The fact that they haven't won a 450 Supercross title since 2003 and an Outdoor 450 title since 2004. I don't think anyone expects their current guys to come out and win a championship, challenge for wins yes, but titles would be a surprise. But they still sell bikes because their reputation and their attention to detail in their product.

People are a lot smarter the last 15 yrs . Honda had a good 4t for a long time and everyone new the Suzuki was junk as far as quality goes . KTM is selling because their bikes are good , really no other reason .

I disagree. I think KTM sells a lot of their bikes based on positive associations with their riders, team managers, and race results. I think the some of the success of their smaller displacement bikes is due to an admiration many youngsters have for the younger RD, and some of the success of their larger displacement bikes is due to an admiration many older guys have for the older RD.

How many of you believe in the old win and sell mantra?

Suzuki might have been the most successful team Stateside from 00-2010 right? 8 or 9 titles in those ten years? Bet they didn't outsell Honda over the same period.

Gear, sure I could see a big ticket guy selling that, but bikes? Parts maybe?
I was thinking Kawasaki had the most wins, during that time frame. I could be wrong.

Where I live, all the shops are closed on Monday (true but just keeping it light).

Personally, I dont think that concept applies. Im sure there are exceptions but that is what they are, jiust exceptions.

Yep, you're right Cali11, just counted for 2001-2010

Red 6
Green 10
Blue 4
Yellow 9
Orange 1

Which I guess only extends the point, because you'd have to guess Red and Blue were more popular sales for that time period than green or yellow - you still hear people asking if Kawi.Zook are reliable as the other two etc...

KTM sold me a bike because of their ride orange demo program. I rode the demo on Sunday and bought the bike on Tuesday. I could give a shit what pro rider is riding for them or who their team manager is.

They've been doing just that for a while now.

Anyone buying a bike because of what results pro riders are having probably already wanted that particular bike to begin with. Though, there's no one size fits all rationale for consumer behavior, even niche consumers like us. I really do not like the post-2010 shitty handling and vague front end feel of Yamahas, but I've bought them anyway for the reliability and my lack of spare cash to cover an unexpected 4 stroke aneurysm.

I came back to mx at 49 y/o (54 now) and never gave KTM a 2nd thought, untill recently,,,, the 350F is look'n good, lets just say KTM is on my bucket list, got to give props to Roger D. and that guy on the box of Wheaties, they're both great salesmen. Oh, and I remember when a Stock Car looked like the car my mother drove, minus the decals.
