Just curious what ya'll think about why we can't seem to get more "outside the sport" big corporate sponsors??

JGR seems to be the only guy knocking down some and that really isn't even all that great as they need several to make it go.

Obviously guys like wheaties, which is just a small portion of food giant General mills sees valu............why no Snickers, M & M's ???

Seems like we have the younger demographic that NASCAR is desperately seeking and gets support. And I really don't buy the amount of logo coverage space issue..........everyone knows its RED BULL KTM, MONSTER KAWASAKI/PC, GEICO HONDA, etc, etc

Just seems so odd that TV has grown, more mainstream attention........I mean Dungey has Target, Toyota is activating the JGR connection a lot............whats it gonna take???

The stigma of mx being a dangerous sport. Parents fear putting their kids on bikes, big corporations know this and do not see a market they can tap in to for advertising their product. The market is self contained, mostly riders, former riders and their kids. There is no return on investment. You cant make mx mainstream in helicopter parents eyes

I sometimes wondered the same. I was also thinking the difference (NASCAR) is that they have their big old car as the billboard each and every weekend. A bike and rider only has so much real estate for sponsors to place brand logos, that will get so little of air time, the return on investment is probably nothing more than the joy of knowing you are helping the team out.

I know I am old here, but I miss the days of real factory teams (purely speaking from a visual perspective).

You just made a generalization that like most generalizations isn't correct RE everyone knows. Our little clique knows but the masses apparently do not know otherwise we would be mainstream by now.

On how it should be done John Slater's Blue Buffalo effort is a great story and one that continues to unfold. Can't wait to see what the next three years bring especially now that Larry Brooks is Team Manager.

compared to the past we get great TV coverage..................as far as logo goes there has to be integration into the clothing ie; monster kawasaki, geico honda, etc...............guess i'm just seeing things differently as Dungey seems to be knocking into the corporate world and is on top of the sport now

Sponsor poaching is a big issue. The teams themselves bring in outside sponsorship. The outside sponsors are then approached by Feld, and Feld propositions them as such: "Why pay X amount of dollars to put your name on the side of that bike, when the rider, in all likelihood will get injured... You can give us the same amount of money and we will put you on the jumbotron and get you in front of 55K eyeballs at every round"

Sucks so badly that the series promoter would do that, but they do.

Somebody should mention the exclusive deals that prohibit new sponsors from entering the (ahem) circus.

Not being mainstream is just another part of what makes moto cool. I'm fine with it how it is.

Simple really. As many have mentioned we are a small niche sport which is what makes if great to most of us. However, that is exactly what doesn't make it great to outside sponsors. In other words, one of our biggest strengths is one of our beggest weakness to outside sponsors. Outside big company sponsors need to spend their money where it can provide future revenue. The reality is, we are a small sport with an even smaller group of people that have disposable income. So advertising dollars go to a small number of people with an even small ROI. It makes poor business sense.

GrapeApe, has a good list of outside sponsors but a lot of those are transient and we have all seen tons of big outside sponsor come and go, because they see that it has not payed off. Trust me, companies are in business to make money, and if they knew or had been proven to that they can yeild a good ROI off of MX, they would be calling us not us calling them, so to speak. Sometimes, reality sucks.

How many remember when Surf Detergent was an outside sponsor... a privateer of all things? Being that it is mostly a cult sport, with participants disappearing on an annual basis, the above list is pretty extensive.

Great marketing is being able to make an impression on the people who really aren't paying attention. Even the casual observer who watched the Hangtown overage could see the BLUE on Broc Schumelyn's Slatershield.

We need more IMHO more outside interest from the yet to be fans crowd. Love it or hate it that's where the growth as far as spectators will come from.

Questions:

1) Is the emphasis shifting towards TV numbers over head count at the gate?

2) if so would this place more or less emphasis on available signage space on the motorcycle?

3) Does where the emphasis is placed affect the value of available signage space one way or the other.

Change is inevitable. A related question is how long does it take to accept change?

Home Depot is not a sponsor, and I don't know when the last time Target was seen or mentioned. Does Dungey still have the logo on his motorhome?
The most logical demographic to target, for growth of the sport, would most likely be the NASCAR crowd. That's the train you want to rob. There are millions of potential fans out there, who love great racing of any variety, and just haven't been exposed enough to gain an appreciation for motocross. One thing for sure is that change is inevitable. I'm optimistic that SX and MX will increase in popularity with the casual fan who is typically attracted to NASCAR. The growth isn't going to come from the folks participating at the grassroots level, that's for sure.

And Target is still one of Dungey's main sponsors with a big logo still on his motorhome. Here is his whip from last year but its pretty similar if not identical to the wrap this year.

Thanks Rooster...if I didn't go to a race every now and then I'd have no idea that Target had anything to do with motocross. When was the last time Dungey thanked them from the podium? They're not a significant sponsor of the sport, maybe a personal sponsor of Ryans'...and you would need a pit pass to see the motorhome.
As far as Home Depot, the owner of Barn Pros was asked about the relationship in an interview. He said that Home Depot is not a sponsor and doesn't contribute to the team. It's just a store that sells whatever the Barn Pros product is.

Logo on the truck is seen by thousands on every trip.

Honestly I'd put the onus on Feld for their monster truck mentality in promoting and production of the races. Not to mention the poaching.

That is exactly what Ive been saying. Dungeys RV has Target logo is seen by thousands. A company Targets siize would normaly expect hundreds of thousands to see it. However, with this case, itemd to belive Dungey's relationship with Target may have a lot to do with both from Minnesota. Kind of like, small town resident makes good. Kind of like state loyalty.

Interesting that you mentioned the Minn. connection. I was thinking about what the possible connection was, and the first thing I thought was that Target was originally a Minn. company. My other thought was that perhaps Target had a ongoing relationship with St. Judes Children's Hospital which led to the affiliation with Ryan. I don't get the impression that Target is attempting to gain a huge following with the moto crowd by having their logo on Dungey's motorhome and nowhere else, that I've seen... except for the palm of his gloves a couple years ago.

From my understanding, it's part of Target's branding to not have Ryan Dungey blasting the name all over the place. The more subtle logo placement is what they prefer.

I'd hope Dungeys motorhome still has the Target logo on it since they paid for the motorhome
