Why don't we get great photo's like this nowadays? You almost feel like your stood in the middle of the track.
I dont know wether it's digital camera's, those massive lens but todays photographers seem to be lacking in the
composition, artistic skills to make a great image.
Is it because they are no longer allowed into certain areas around the track?

If you think I'm wrong, lets see the modern day Gianatsis, Morey's, Boullands and your work!

That shot is a lot closer than you think.

Does this count? Shot on Sunday at a local vintage race. Straight from the camera, no crop, no post production. And, yes, I was that close.

zoomed a bit though otherwise the background would be crisp as well.

Shot at 70mm, on the short end of my 70/200. Shot at f/5 and f3.2 respectively . When the guy that got the holeshot turned, he was less than 2" from my feet. When the jumper landed, I was on the edge and he landed within the same amount of distance. You cannot get a crisp background if you're f/5 or under, zoom or no zoom. The only way you're going to get a crisp background is if you're shooting f/12+ I make my husband as nervous when he watches me shoot as he makes me watching him race.

When you feel the ground thump underneath you and get dust on your shoes from a motorcycle landing off of a jump, you're close. Too close, but that's where the action is!

I think the pics nowa days are every bit as good, with better quality then back then. its just all the riders now ride for money and to look cool rather than with heart!

I'm proud to say I am a rookie photographer, honestly I am. I was shooting with a Rebel XT and my husband, 8 yo daughter and I decided we wanted motorcycles and all got MX bikes two years ago. I barely had any keeper photos with my kit lenses and body.

I have had my "new" to me (ebay Canon 1D Mark IIN) and Sigma 70/200 2.8 (craigslist) only since last July. I have so much more to learn and wish I could download all things photography into my brain overnight. Unfortunately I've learned you can read everything but unless you shoot and shoot and shoot you won't get better, no matter what equipment you have.

I've learned a lot from looking at photographers such Erbeman (his photos every bit as beautiful as Cudby's) and several photograph forums.

I love this Charlie Morey pic that was featured in the latest Moto Retro Illustrated

Some of it might be the textures you get from a real film camera.

My daughter shot this at GH last year, with a 35mm Minolta that I got when I was fresh out of high school.

I think the pics these days are every bit as good and better than what was available then (classic subjects aside). What you didn't see then were what people tossed out, only what made it into the magazines, which were very few images.

These days with the internet you see way, way more pics than you used to. Including a lot of the tossers and stuff from shooters who may be average. That's a huge volume of stuff to sift through and it dulls the senses sometimes.

But I think there are about ten or more guys who are delivering solid stuff all the time. GuyB, Cox, Simon, Frank, Kardy, Buckley when he shoots pros, Stone, TOE when he shoots bikes, Garth, Swap, Chris Tedesco, Chris Hultner, and guys whose names don't come to mind or I haven't seen in awhile (Hal Kennedy).

Honestly, that's an okay shot at the top, but I'm not sure that's an image that I'd make classic or artsy.

It definitely shows how crappy the track conditions regularly were back then.

I agree as far as black and white. I think the stuff scanned from B&W film is nicer than the digi conversions, however it's done, although those are getting better

Tony Scavo does some great, really creative, stuff (remember strobe-gate?), but I think he rarely does any MX these days. Good dude that really got the 'industry' shaft IMNSHO.

I always shot with film and a cheap Canon AV1 or AE. Digital is king but film can still give you nice shots.

We didn't get pics like this back then...Seems like a fair trade.

The more I look at this pic the crazier it looks. That jump is insane!!!
