I personally dislike Villopoto's decision to leave the sport here in the US. I don't blame him, as no one can, but in a very real way he's stealing thunder from other riders who, in his absence, will not be given full credit for winning the 2015 Supercross title. It's a shadow on the year ahead, a painful void for the ones who want to win against the very best, and a decision I wish was delayed at least until 2016.
However, one thing about 2015 I find extremely interesting is this.... could Jason Anderson play the Jeremy McGrath role of 1993? For some reason I believe he could start winning soon, and if he does, no one can diminish this in Villopoto's absence. In fact, Villopoto would have to return to the US and attempt to reclaim his title -- a truly perfect come back scenario the likes of which the sport has never seen.
Yes, Tomac is new and there are a few others, but Anderson is a wild card who races different, doesn't seem mentally rattled by the competition, and just has something special about him which "could" be evidence of a 1993 repeat. When I think of Anderson on this amazing looking Husqvarna for 2015, I'm hoping he'll shock the world just as McGrath did 22 years ago.
The sport needs this. I want him to ruin them early and rev up the game! In Villopoto's absence, imo, it's just what we need.

The Shop
1993 had the following:
- Stanton who was over trained and burned out
- Bradshaw who hated his job (racing dirt bikes)
- MX Keid and Rock who were better outdoors
- MC who brought new technique
1993 could of been radically different with a healthy RJ, motivated JMB, passionate Bradshaw, and hungry Stanton. MC, who has a lot of talent and changed the game also came into 250 class at the perfect time.
2014
- Field is stacked and hungry with veterans (DM 18, Stew, Dunge, Canard, Barcia)
- Field is stacked with youth (Tomac and KROC)
- Field has some serious rookies (DW15, BB4, JA, CS14)
The rider you mentioned, MC, changed the game via new technique. Before him, it was Hannah and RJ. RC and RV followed MC by changing the game. How/what technique, training does JA18 bring to the table?
* RV is a living legend. Comparing the 2015 SX champ to RV is foolish and short sighted.
I hope its Tomac and Canard.
I'm not the biggest RV fan but he was the MAN in supercross for 4 years in a row and if you honestly think Jason Anderson would be the guy to dethrone him in 2015, you need your brain examined!! Dude has talent for sure but he barely took down Cole Seely last year? IMO Seely and Anderson aren't elite level guys like Tomac and Roczen and have zero chance at a title on 450s.
Wouldn't this be the same exact scenario if RV decided to race the rest of 2015 in the US and wins, then retires. Everyone is saying in 2016 "Well, If he was still racing...."
Any way you see it until a few years after his departure people won't get the "full credit" because we know what RV could have possibly done.
There must have been a Jupiter size void in 2007 outdoors when Carmichael crushed everyone with one foot out the door and Stewart went out with a knee injury.
Pit Row
I don't believe Anderson will win, at least in his rookie season. Yes he will be fast, but so has many rookies. I think Roczen, Millsaps, Tomac, Canard, Stewart, and more will be equally as fast and more consistent. His style and charisma is good for the sport and 450 class, I will say that.
If you think JA17 is a joke or doesn't have a shot you're nuts. He's got that late race presence, where he picks up speed later in the race a la Chupacabra outdoors. It works very well for him.
No doubt Eli and Kenny will be tough, as will Dungey, Canard, Millsaps etc. But I think the kid has a shot.
