Roczen is gone until at least next season. Tomac might dominate this summer but I'd hardly call him a big star at the level of Dungey and to a slightly lesser extent Roczen. I would say for the first time in a long, long time American dirt bike racing is without a star.

Has Eli really not done enough to be considered a star to you? 9 SX wins in a row bro... where were you?

Good question... Other than Roczen who you mentioned is out indefinitely, nobody really stands above the rest. I think of a star as an elite rider with strong media skills and a story fans can grab onto. Anderson is awkward on the podium, Marvin is French (no offense French people), Eli is getting there but seems to hate media stuff.

Webb will soon be a star, he creates some drama, is elite fast and gives good interviews.

To be fair, he needs a 450 title in something; that's probably a few months away yet. And remember, it only takes one harsh crash to torpedo all that.

Ditto on Webb. Star in waiting.

AC could be one too if he can stay healthy and run up front consistently. He is as close to a Dungey-esque racer that we have now.

Go out on the street and mention McGrath, Carmichael, Reed, Stewart, RV, Dungey, and Tomac and see which one gets the most blank stares. Not saying he can't be, I'm just saying he doesn't have that "IT" yet.

In US racing? Roczen, comfortably. You have to be a 450 winner to be up there, Tomac will be there after this summer if he doesn't bottle it(i can't imagine how he could fail to win it).

GP and US racing? Roczen, Cairoli and Gajser.

Edit: I assume that we are talking about active racers?

Most people that i talk to that have some kind of passing knowledge of MX ask if James Stewart is racing. This is not even fishing at all.

The question is who is the sports biggest star. Not who has the most fans. There is a difference.

To the 'outside world' probably still JS7. McGrath, Carmichael and Stewart are names that transcend the sport, I wouldn't say any of the current riders are at/near that level. The closest at the moment is probably Roczen.

You become a "star" by winning championships.

I'd say chad Reed is still up there.

I know Euro riders are probly not meant for this topic, but i'd say that AC222 is the biggest star right now. At 31 years old currently holding the red plate in MXGP fighting for his 9th world title Cool

Something interesting (at least I thought)...

If Reed, for some reason, doesn't line up next year, there will be no former SX champs on the line. Unless, I am forgetting about someone. This also assumes Stewart doesn't line up.

For the most part, it will be whoever starts winning this summer. Most casual fans are fair weather fans, they just like thr guy always on the top step and will boo whowver gets in their way. Tomac is next in line and already has a huge fan base and half the members on here consider him the "people's champ" of this SX season anyway.

I stopped having a favorite rider after the age of 13. All these guys are stars and I resoect the hell out of them all but I just want to see good racing, regardless of who wins or loses.
