I have a Ryan Clark Bobble head. Dude must have been pretty popular to have one of his own. I don't remember Jt$, Carsten, Lewis, or anyone else having one.

What about Larry Ward? He was privateer Team Noleen. I know he had factory rides before and after but that was a his best results and pure private team getting no help from Yamaha. Shit he finished 2nd to MC in SX.

voss was a full blown factory yamaha rider for a bunch of years what maybe 2 or 3 the rest he was a privateer on a honda and hes been around aloooong time
When you fly to the races in your parents private jet, and your "privateer" honda's are being driven to the races for you in a couple hundred thousand dollar funmover, I dont exactly call you a "privateer"......And this thread is about "most popular privateer", and Voss is far from ever being popular, or a privateer.

Of all the guys who never had a factory ride I think Carey Hart has them beat by a mile. You didn't say popular for what.

Lots of good names here.

But don't forget that in the 70's Tony DiStefano on his CZ at age 17 or 18 'vanned it' out of a Dodge and almost won the championship.

This was pre-Suzuki obviously...

Good job Rex! I was wondering if some one would mention Tony D. He about won the 500cc National Championship in 1974 against Jimmy Weinert but broke his knee right before the last round.

Slept in his van("Hotel Dodge") or on the floor of other's rooms and borrowed coat hangars from people to use as welding rod to hold his CZ together...

True privateer!

Cooper didnt win his first 125 national until Troy,Ohio 1987 and he was a Honda Support rider and not a true privateer..and for 88 he was on the official factory team and also for the rest of his career after that.
