Been thinking to add another bike to my collection. Lately looking for something to buy and build. I live in the Denver, CO area and prices are bat shit crazy on used dirt bikes around here though. I am thinking I could go on a cross country road trip and buy a bike along the way for the same price as buying a used bike locally. Anyone know of areas or states with reasonably priced used dirt bikes anymore?

Australia. Your exchange makes it a no brainer. Second hand market definitely favours buyers.

I feel your pain, man. I am here in Denver also, and I looked continuously for months at a time and it was slim pickings. I finally found a bike that seemed like a good deal and snagged it, but it's turned out to be a bit of a headache...apparently this guy had no idea what a torque wrench was and stripped a bunch of stuff out. I'm sure you already know, but be diligent if you find something that looks like a deal.

As for your question, I'm not totally sure. I've actually seen a few bikes posted here that looked like much better deals than anything I could find locally as soon as I bought my bike. If you're willing to travel, that might be an option.

I'm in Denver as well and came from Mississippi. Two different markets both were stupid high in my opinion. I can remember buying an 07 250f less than a year old for $3500 in 08 which was about half of new price, now used bikes are only $1500-2000 off new prices. Two strokes and the dual sport markets are even worse. I see 07ish wr450 for 5k plus all the time. I've been trying to findo a blown up 125 for cheap for the last couple months with no luck. Good luck.

It is getting harder and harder. I think it is google, people are seeing what the "asking" prices are which leads too monkey see monkey do... Just gotta look everyday, good deals are usually gone in hours. We check craigslist 3-4 times a day... Just snagged a 12 YZ125 at a great deal, kid was moving up and dad had a line on a 16 YZ250f and had to have the cash to make that deal work... TIMING!!!

In my area prices for clean well maintained bikes have went up quite a bit in the last year or two. Even crappy 125's are almost always a grand now and basket cases are listed at 700.

I know how you feel. I decided to get back into riding after taking several years off and the prices that people were asking for even average looking bikes were ridiculous. It was a bit more than I wanted to pay, but I ended up getting a new left over 2016 RMZ250 for 5k. Like I said, I wasn't really wanting to pay that much but I figured the peace of mind of knowing that I had a new bike was worth paying a bit more, especially considering some of the prices I was seeing and not knowing what might be wrong with a used bike.

I've sold four 4 strokes and two 2 strokes on Craigslist. Never sold a single darntutin 1 stroke.

What are you looking for? Newer 4 stroke or a clean used 2 stroke?

Here in ohio theres bikes for $250 to $7000. All depends on the quality of the bike. Nobody is selling a 17 crf450 for $2500 if thats what youre looking for.

Anywhere near training facilities; Tallahassee/south Georgia has a pleathorea of practice bikes/ex race bikes that pop up for sale at reasonable prices. Obviously, the caveat that they have been really ridden quite hard.

Hold off for about 8 weeks, that's when you'll see a flood of things for sale to grab the 18s. I suspect a lot of older RMZ450s and YZF450s will come up soon.

I've never had to leave my area to find good deals on used bikes but you do have to be patient.
I have a used one for sale in Bizzare forum right now.

Crazily those prices are more affordable then around Denver right now.

Here are a some doosies I found lately:
A hideous looking 02 yz125 with a blown motor and a thrashed chassis sold yesterday in less then 24 hours for $800.
A pretty 06 KX250, probably a blown engine and blown tranny the seller is at $2000 firm.
A1993 YZ250, it runs, seller is at $2000 firm
A hideous mud covered 1989 CR250, MUH REBUILT BIKE, $2200

Realistically in Denver area right now: 125s and 250s that look and run good are at $2500-3300. 125s and 250s that look and run OK are at $1800-2500. 125s and 250s that look and run like crap and are ready to be torn down and rebuilt are $1000-1800. If a bike is under $1000 its a parts bike at best.

Here are the latest two strokes for sale in Colorado right now. I understand two strokes are popular right now but damn these prices are crazy.

I hear you. I am not looking for a '17 under $3000 though. I am just looking for a 15 to 20 year old bike for $800-$1200 that isn't completely clapped out. Check out that link I posted above. There is nothing under a grand worth buying in CO. Ohio sounds like a great market if there are dirt bikes for sale down to $250. Only thing for sale in CO for $250 are shitty 1970s-1980s road bikes without titles that are taken apart and being sold in boxes. Here is one of my local $250 favorites: CB100 needs some TLC

Yeah I've been looking for a cr125 around Denver for a few months now. Prices were more reasonable in the winter but they always go up for the riding season. I think everybody around here has been taking advantage of our drug laws, because there is no way you can think these things are worth so much without being completely high.

Same with prices around here. I have no clue what has raised the prices. In 2010 when I was looking hardcore in my area it wasn't rare to see a 2008 crf250 for $3000 or less. Now if its 2-4 years old they want $4k. It's nuts! What has changed!? Is it that 2 strokes are just getting that much more rare? Driving the prices up of everything? Makes no sense.

What changed is the price of new bikes. Unless you wait for year end you are looking at min $6500 for a 250f and around $8k for 450f. I used to figure around $500 loss per season on my bike, give or take on condition and hours and be able to upgrade. I can no longer do that, now its at least $750-$1k loss, hence cost of used bikes going up. I'll price my clean bike high, if it sells I'll upgrade, if not i'll keep it another season.

The cheapest dealership I have ever heard of is Rydersville Cycle in West Virginia. Ask for Harold.

A nice 2002 yz250 titled is $2000. Imo any bike within 15 years old under $1500 is probably a ticking time bomb.

Have you guys tried OfferUp? I've found some good deals on there and the app is super easy to use. What I like best is that communiction is kept anonymous.
