What will be the next big bike innovation?

Curious as to what others think will be the next substantial improvement. Maybe some kind of traction control?

Have you seen the new Ossa? All it's missing is traction control.

Direct injected two stroke with traction control will be the ultimate dirt sickle. The only problem will be in getting the tc to work properly because sometimes you want rear wheel spin.

All I hope for is weight reduction on the 450f's. They just keep getting more tank ass every year. (other than the Honda which has other issues).

In could agree, i don't know how well it will do for reliability though. I run a high end bicycle shop and can tell you on the 7,000 race frames for road bikes they can actually lay the carbon fiber in different ways to increase flex in some areas and stiffen in others. But with a road frame costing 7,000 i hope to god to never see them on a mx bike unless they drop in price.

fly by wire, auto clutches in one form or another, traction control. Beyond that I think we will start to see hybrid bikes in the form of small displacement internal combustion engine generating electricity for electric final drive.

Where does it say traction control is forbidden? Better remove clutch levers and rekluse clutches then.

Radial brake master cylinders and calipers. Conventional forks. Wheels. Electrical motors. Lighter weight. Way more on-the-fly ignition choices. (which is a sort-of traction-control). Ossa and Husaberg engine configurations. Cassette transmissions. Four-strokes out-dated(again).

GPS systems built into the bike - multiple uses - lap time transponder and locator if your bike is stolen.

Auto clutches. If anyone has ridden a bike with a Rekluse Z-Start Pro clutch you will know what I mean.

The Ossa is a FI 2 stroke but it's not a DI engine.

Nothing way out there on the horizon but a DI 2 stroke w/ a very basic form of TC using wheel speed calculations and an on/ off switch is undoubtedly coming down the pipeline from KTM most likely. Of course DI will also nececitate (sp?) auto-lube injection systems that run as oil lean as 200:1 at idle. It'll be cool because the oil will simply last much longer.

The death of the 4 stroke is inevitable imo and not just in the dirt bike world.

I also envision heavy duty truck engines (18 wheelers which is what I sell) w/ DI large displacement 2 stroke engines in the future. The hp/ weight, cost to manufacture, and required emissions equipment would all far favor the 2 stroke.

Remember the Detroit diesel two strokes? I don't think we will see anymore two stroke diesels. Dirt bikes on the other hand, I expect two strokes to come back to prominence within the next ten years. Hopefully sooner.

Sure I remember the Detroit 2 strokes. Actually they were before my time but I know of them.

Anyways, consider that the engine manufacturers are selling their engines minus $20K of after treatment to the truck chassis manufacturers for $40K plus and I think you can see where there is room for some thinking outside of the box.

Then when you consider that DI 2 strokes are quiet, get great mpg, are cheap to manufacturer, and pack a hell of a wallop of power, and already can pass on road emissions standards I think you can see where there might be a home for them. The exhaust system has always been a major factor in 2 stroke desing but we have the real estate under the hood of a big truck.

Are you familiar w/ the Lotus' 2 stroke, diret injection, variable compression engine?

Where do you think that realestate will come from? Have you been under the hood of a truck lately? They are horrible. I realize that most of it is emissions related crap but they have also been shrinking under hood area to help with aerodynamics. Even a 389 Pete and a W900 KW are cramped compared to the older trucks.
The other problem they are going to face is getting the truck buying companies to embrace a technology that burned them in the past. Most of the fleet people are old enough to remember the bad old days if you know what I mean. As much as the new emissions standards have irritated them I still don't think they are going to be embracing two stroke diesels anytime soon.


FYI: I am currently a fleet supervisor for a beer distributor and came from a Freightliner dealer. I was an engine mechanic and then moved into management there before I came to where I work now. I love all things two stroke but I wouldn't buy them for my fleet now. At least not right away.
