I remember him at Glen Helen USGP following Roczen around in 2nd place by 3-5 seconds "very respectable"

Now the last few years Herlings seems to be at a different level , my question is what changed ?

Fitness? Coaching? I think if you already have a ton of talent then when you add in experience, more fitness, etc then you go a heck of a lot faster.

His was only 16 or so at the time. His body would have still been developing

Talent
Practice
Support
Equipment

And a deep rooted desire to own the world in his chosen sport

Oh, let's not forget he is only getting faster

All these phenolms are the same, downright annoying hahahaa

PED's. Jusssst kidding. I think it's mostly confidence. You need the talent but if you don't believe in yourself it's useless.

I think the lack of Roczen (or a similar talent) is making him look more dominate that he really is. If he were racing Cairoli/Desalle/Paulin/Villopoto he'd look far more mortal. The MX2 talent pool that past few years has been very shallow.

Well Roczen who was clearly the fastest in that class went to race in the US while Herlings is still in the same class...

Herlings is still a kid now .. when he rode against Roczen he was 15/16, he has grown up and muscled up since then.

In the sand , he is insane, at Lierop in 2013 he came by us with an 8 second lead halfway round the first lap.. and he lapped everyone up to 2nd.. the sand is different to Lommel , and he just floats over it , from bump to bump in a way no-one else even gets close to.. its total momentum , no slamming , just wide open sweeps and loads and loads of speed, and over the last 2 seasons he has brought that technique to every other surface.

Unless you stand trackside and see it with your own eyes , you wont get it .. he doesnt look fast , because he is so smooth.

I still replay those 2 races from Lierop. He was unbelievable that day.

I'm not saying he's not fast...he obviously is...but he isn't racing against a rider of his caliber in MX2, so it makes him appear far more dominant/faster than he really is. Put Roczen, Musquin, back in that class...and though he'll be going the same speed he is now, he won't be as dominant and so the perception of him won't be what it is right now. .

Lol kid...Herlings n KR are both born in 94,
Herlings Was dominated over KR in sand and KR dominated over jh in everything else.
As for mx2 being weak
.um how is fevbre going in mx 1.
Once herlings is fit his lap time will be comparable to mx1

I think he's just "the guy" over there now. Meaning, everything has come together: overall fitness/bike skill/line selection/bike. Someone has to be the best in class and he's that guy (easily at the moment).

It can't be good for his development being in mx 2 again this year...

Yes , but KRoc has a birthday in April , so he got races in his year of being 15..first race was Portugal,2009, whereas Herlings birthday is september , and the season is pretty much done by then, Herlings didnt debut till Bulgaria in 2010, so Kenny was almost a year in front .

Don't know if this is true (I haven't seen him live) but as well as looking super smooth on tv, it always seems to me that with his riding style he stays centred on the motorcycle a lot more than other riders, even in places where you'd normally think he'd be further up the seat?? Again I stand corrected if that's wrong.

Hes an animal. The most talented rider in both mx2 and mxgp IMO. Hope he can get a chance to ride 450 come the end of the year in a few rounds to give RV and AC a run.

If you guys think Herrings hasn't vastly improved since Roczen was beating him in 2010, you are high and/or stupid and/or haven't actually been paying attention.

I just don't get this argument that somehow Herlings has vastly improved and apparently just left people behind...

Kenny got some top 10s and one podium in his first sx lites season, went back, won a world title... then podiums sx lites, top 5s and podium and a couple wins in his first mx season in the USA for fourth overall.. Then won a regional title, won a bunch of nationals in the lites class and came 2nd, won some premier SX races, came 3rd, won the premier 450 national title and was looking pretty good this year in the 450 sx until a brain fart.

That's progression, and against more competition than Herlings is repeatedly hitting over the head in MX2

I saw him at the USGP. At the time I think he would have easily handled K-Roc on a sand track, but he was still developing on other surfaces.

What has changed since then is he has improved on those other surfaces and he is not just a sand specialist.

He wouldn't be dominating over here, same as our 250 guys wouldn't over there.
