For your style of riding obviously.

So if you wanted the relish in the pure shock value of, "I can't believe that guy thinks he's going to race that bike!!!"- yet you could actually be as fast as your current mill, what bike would you choose?

I've won vet A on my 03 YZ250. I sold my 450 a couple years ago. I'm one of those old guys that just has more fun on a smoker. I also did some time on a 98 YZ125. Don't think I could win anything on that bike.

Well, I'm planning on winning at least one round (hopefully) of the WORCS series this year in my over 40 class on my 2008 KTM 250xc. When the winner of the evolution class still beats me I don't think I need the new bike I keep wishing for.

2015 obviously.

I'm definitely slow but I felt more comfortable on my dad's 83 yz 250 than I did on my 01 Yz 250.

Since I'm in the c class, I don't think the bike is a limiting factor. I've done 2 races and haven't won yet. I got 2nd on a 2003 kx250 as the only non 450 on the gate, but I think it was lack of corner speed rather than the bike that prevented the win. I'm going to race my 1989 rm250 and see how it goes. I've always loved jumping and freeriding, and never practiced corners, but I've been doing a little more corners lately.

I raced a two stroke shoot out on my 2014 KTM 250 SX, and got beat pretty handily by a EARLY 90's CR125. The rider is a really fast Vet rider, but still...... Made me rethink how nice of a bike I needed

+40 Intermediate and I rode my nephews 96 CR250 last summer and it was nice. The bike has work on the suspension and engine and is in cherry condition. It would wear me out a little faster, but I think I could go just as fast on that bike as any.

Completely rider dependent.

Honestly there is maybe 2 guys that post here that can use a stock 450 to its potential.

Hell, anyone of us could win a local race on a stock 03 CR 125 ( probably the slowest 125 ever made ) if we knew how to ride it....Case in point is Stewie back in his 125 days, look how fast he was going. Guaranteed if you could take a 17 year old james and teleport him to the present with his 03' KX 125, he would still be on the podium if not winning.

I think it's about being comfortable and confident on the bike.. That said, I was most comfortable on my 92 CR250R. If I could build one with the latest modern suspension, I'd ride happily ever after.

I don't even think I could test the limits of an 85 (cc's, not year, haha)

that's a very good point. By the way, what's he been up to? Haven't heard much about him lately. Has he still been riding? Moved to another brand after the Geico help/dealio?

this is what I find funny when they start talking about any 450 engine being underpowered in bike test s. every 450 has more than enough power imo , just some are smoother . might not have the same hp , but for 99% of the world every band of 450 has to much power .I d put money on an unfit RC beating 90% of most mx riders on a 70 s motocross bike

If you are K-Dub, then it would be a '74 Bultaco, obviously.

I have a slightly different opinion on a 450 being enough for 99%. Sure, a 250 ridden efficiently and with proper technique would be just as fast or faster than a 450 in most of our hands. But not everyone gets to ride more than once every week or two. So the added power of the 450 helps compensate for some of the lacking technique. So the bike essentially does make the weekend warrior faster because it has more power even though we don't stay on or near the rev limiter hardly ever. And you can notice a difference in acceleration between a 250f and 450f.

Having said that, I really like my Yz250 2 stroke but I had an 08 Yz450 a year ago and really liked that bike as well.

I woods ride for recreation, but I like to learn technique and bike set up and even raced a couple hare scrambles. I'm very content with all aspects of my 2011 KTM 250SX, but I think I could do just as well with a 1996 RM250 with a brake upgrade.

Sometimes I think it would be fun to buy an old dog that was beaten to death, then invest only in the motor/suspension, ergos, and make sure pivot points and drivetrain are all fresh, etc... but keep it looking like a total rat trap.

Holy shit. I wouldn't do that if you paid me 50,000 a year tax free for the rest of my life.

Raced a few harescrambles on a motocross set up 08 yz250 and got my ass handed to me by a guy on a 99 rm250. Smoked him on the field and track sections but this guy was unreal in the woods.

I was more talking about mags in test s saying the Honda is to under powered ,its a 450 . yes it has less than the Yamaha and ktm . but people are codding themselves if they they cant win cause the bike is under powered . no 450 is underpowered for 99% of motocross riders ,the 1% are pro riders , as you say the 250f has enough power . I personlly love riding a 450. I hav a very smooth style and ride very lows revs so the 450 suits me great .

I rebuilt a 1996 cr250 two years ago to race the Ama vintage motocross series in the non current Class. After the series I took it out to a local track here in Ohio and won the 14-24 class on it.

Those bikes may look old but it is a very competitive bike to this day.

I only race old bikes. My "new" race bike is an '87 CR250. It is all fresh and runs pretty well for a nearly 30 year old (!) bike. I primarily ride vintage events, but I do ride the occasional vet race and end up riding my '87 in the +30 class and my '80 CR250 in the +40 class and my '77CR125 in the 125/250 C class.

I don't win- but I do embarrass an awful lot of riders, especially in the 125/250 C class- they get bummed when they are passed by that old Elsinore. I used to ride it in the Beginner class (and ask not to be scored so I don't take some newbie's trophy) I felt bad passing someone who finally got the nards to try racing and didn't want to be that guy.

I got no problem embarrassing a C rider, though.

Like some other guy said, rider dependent. Back in 2011 I raced a local series outside of Vegas on 3 different bikes from week to week. 4 if you count the 250f. The oldest was the 05 crf450, but I got to race Kyle's Star bike and a Honda that Sycuan loaned him before the whole H&H deal that was an '11. The 05 was actually a lot of fun, and had some serious bottom end to it. I rode that more often than not thanks to a family that was helping me, and won the local pro races from track to track on that thing.

I would probably do just as good on any 02+ 250 2-stroke as I do on my 13' 450.

McDade raced a local pro 20 lapper money race in 2011. Everyone was on their trick new 450's and he waxed them on a stock 1998 Yz 250.

I won the last race of the season last year on my bone stock 07 CR250. Granted it was only 30+ novice but I was going pretty good. I had won the 2 rounds before that on my 450.

I'm going to race 30+ B/C at Daytona next month on it.

I race with a guy that races an 00 or 01 STREET LEGAL-license plate and everything-Honda XR400...and is FAST! (I'm talking off road races here) He races 40+B (but I think he's moving to 40+A this year) and would clean house every race. He's just an all around good dude...and people always give him crap about his license plate, and trail bike...but he gets the last laugh when he passes them.

I can't remember which show it was on, but on one podcast a dude mentioned a guy riding on the local mx track on a street legal XR and honking the horn at dudes when he passed them. That's so awesome, haha

In 08' I won every moto I started in the over 40 class on an 87' CR500. I don't figure the outcome would be any different today.

My lap times were were actually 3 sec fast on my 02 cr 125 than on my 12 crf250. Not sure if it's because the transition has been tough for me making switch. I can't say I would win on either or but I feel k would place better on the 125 in my class over 30 at a local level.
