I'm all for simulation, especially for motorsports, but I can't take this seriously for training purposes. A KX450F on a spring, a bicycle helmet and a GoPro video on playback. DIY doesn't get much DIY-er. Respect to the creator for the idea and the will to create projects like this, however.

I don't get it. So you put your bike on a spring, turn on a motocross race, and pretend you are Ryan Dungey?

I wouldn't completely rule out the effectiveness of an mx simulator- simulators are used in many other sports. The NFL for example uses life size simulators to " simulate " defensive/offensive players..

I think it comes down to training the brain to react quicker in certain situations..

Obviously the simulator above is more a video game ..

That's not a simulator, just a guy with his bike on a spring stand watching a gopro video.

Ryno's $2K spring stand watching a gopro.

Bike= $8K (estimated if course)
Spring= $2K
TV/electronics to watch a video=$600 est.

So, ballpark of $11K. Makes sense to those people that have enough money that they count it by weight.

And for that reason, I'm out.

We used to have these around here in malls haha. Could be interesting to see what could be done with the Ryno Spring and a bike like in the video.. Could be something cool to setup at races.

Someone with enough time and money will do it "better", meaning higher fidelity with a 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) base, controls connected to the simulation, etc. Simulation works. Period. As far as mass marketing a product like that, well that's another story. A Moto simulation could help anyone from beginners to pro's. Endless possibilities, for example starts! Or you ride on the same simulated track against a ghost of yourself that is x1.1 faster than your best lap. He (faster you) is your rabbit. Learning track layouts, tricky jump combo's...
I'll bet there are more examples of home built Moto sims out there. Aviation geeks love this stuff.

Simulation will not be effective in motocross until they're able to provide the same feedback that you get while riding. That spring isn't going to simulate any of the physics or forces you feel while actually riding a bike.

Of course, from the physical side. That spring system is low fidelity. A neumatic or possibly hydraulic 6 DOF platform could be so realistic you could/would (based on limit settings) get buck wild feet off the pegs and over the bars realistic. BUT don't count out all the sensory inputs (hand eye) that just the visuals and controls can give you.

First, someone has to make an MX simulator.

I did something similar one year at High Point using the Oculus Rift. They probably needed to put the bike on a spring though

For real though, this is like the mechanical bull at a bar. Probably not to be taken as a serious training tool, but something you could have fun on in the bar.

Minus the non-existent simulator part, Ryno sells and endorses the spring for serious training (at least serious enough to get people to buy them).

I could see this thing being really bad for form. See how the kid has to lean outside when he leans the bike over? Looks almost like a flat track turn. When you're in berms and ruts the g forces of the turn allow you to lean your bike and body down while still balancing. This thing lets you lean the bike but the gravitational force is still perpendicular to the ground. You wouldn't want to develop any habits on this thing.

They had these at Universal Studios theme park when I was there about 20 years ago. Parents had to drag my brother and I off of them to go on more rides.

Next is the simulated ER visit. Then the simulated crank shaft breaking, Then the simulated jr moto dads yelling at the kid for not riding his "potential ". Oh the bonds are limitless .
