From my observations, DeCoster is a very serious man who demands results from his riders. Pastrana seems to be more about having a good time and enjoying himself. It doesn't seem like DeCoster would have been happy having Pastrana on the team, yet Pastrana continued to be a Suzuki man during the entire time Roger was there. Travis is probably the most recognizable athlete to ever come out of mx, so maybe Suzuki knew it would be stupid to let him go. Did DeCoster have a problem with him doing freestyle and other adventures, or was he fine with it? What was their relationship like?

It says that the thread was created 6mins ago, when it actually should have said 10years ago?

^^This....for a second I had to look up and make sure I didn't get caught in some black hole Vortex...

TP took a minimum of 10 years off of RD's lifespan with the stress he caused while he was there. Kind of like every time Mitch has to deal with a rider from France Woohoo

Loved Travis. Knew he could win, wanted him to focus on racing. Short version of the answer he gave me to a similar question one year at Millville.

From what I've read, the relationship was never as bad as it has been portrayed. Travis said Roger is like a father to him, and has always looked out for his best interests.

As famous as TP is because of his non-moto endeavors, I seriously think he couldve been the greatest ever if he had applied himself more to moto. He thrww away a second championship at unadilla in 01 by carelessness. Sucks. I saw an interview with Decoster around 01 where he stated that "....Travis has the potential to rewrite the record books."

Best answer so far. Roger wanted Travis to take a different route than he was taking because he saw the potential. I think they will both be OK as far as we are concerned.

As I remember the conversation waaaaaaay back,
Roger said something to the effect a racers talent is best measured by the results they achieve,

only in the Ringling Bros. circus do they reward you for doing a backflip.
Roger didn't talk too much to Travis, why would you Ricky was a much better student.

I was at Glen Helen when Travis rode his last race I believe.Correct me if I am wrong. It was 2003. TP tried some crazy quad in practice and waded it up. He rode the first moto an tweaked his knee I think.

I got a feeling RD is still pissed at him.

I was there too. I actually spoke to TP at the top of St Helens when he was doing his own track walk and asked him how the knee was. He said it felt great and he was ready to go. Then we all know what happened just a few hours later. That sucked for sure.

Everyone says TP should have focused more when most (not all) of his injuries were from MX/SX or training (not doing random stunts or FMX). And he had Carmichael and Reed to battle against so there was never any point racing when you weren't at your fullest. The only major injuries he really got from FMX were concussions. TP was like Bubba; Really fast but had a tendency to crash when going quick. He even stated himself in 199 Lives that there were seasons where he trained non-stop for months and ended up slower or hurt himself right before the race season started. His lack of racing was mostly due to bad luck and perhaps over-training. Fortunately for himself he made a name for himself in FMX and was able to make a living out of a being a celebrity. And he only really had 3 decent years on 250s to get it done; 2002 to 2004. By 2005 he was on a Cernics team and 2006 he called it quits. It would be interesting if he raced a Vet LL class though. He's 30 or 31 this year I think so realistically he isn't that old.

TP a product of that time, FMX was booming and its rock'n'roll dirtbiking

If he or anyone with that talent appeared now there is no way they'd make the switch like TP did

I came to hear his thoughts on 17th century English-American political activist Thomas Paine.Sad
