Hello I wanted to get an opinion on what kind of bike I want to get it would be used for trail use track use and maybe racing I have narrowed my two choices down to the KX250F (4 Stroke) or YZ125 (2 Stroke) I would like to get other people's opinion on how long they last how much maintenence you have to do ETC. Thanks

Go for the 125. I learned more about how to go fast on a 125 than any other bike I have owned or ridden.

125 for sure. After you can ride the 125 fast you'll go twice as fast on a 250f

Gonna trade in your snow machine for a bike eh?
Yz125 get an 08+ it's the same bike as now - restyled plastic. Considered one of the best mx bikes ever built.
If you were serious about trail and woods riding then get the 250f. But since u r going to be switching between woods and mx the 125 will do fine.
The 125 is far better for maintenance.

Also power wise which one goes faster and has more power?

Get a yz250 and put on an 9oz flywheel weight and a second base gasket. You can get an older aluminum frame 06-09 yz250 for 2500 ish and the mods I mentioned are less than 150 bucks

The 250f has more power. They go the same speed. 250f is just a little bit easier to ride and has more pull through the acceleration. But the 125 is a blast to ride and lighter. Which will benefit you because of your weight

A YZ250 is to much power for me I was thinking a 250 four stroke or 125 two stroke

I agree with the yz250. I have a 125 and love it because I can wring it out. I've ridden a yz250 and it's not the beast everyone makes it out to be. If you respect it and take time to learn, it is very manageable. And the power it makes and the way it pulls is addictive.

I've got a 07 yz 250 2 stroke I'll sell you for $2500.
It was Josh Demuth's bike and I've had it a few years but only rode it about 5 times due to my back injuries.
It's the crispest 250 2 stroke I've ever owned !!!!

I've also got a kawi 06 250f I'll let you have for $2500. The motor was totally rebuilt and only has 2 short rides on it. New tires, brake pads, graphics. Just everything is new on this bike...

I understand that you feel the 250 may be too much power, that's why I suggested the 2 very affordable modifications that will tame the power substantially and can later be removed when you're ready.

was going to say maybe a 250 2 stroke would be better and give you plenty power to grown in to. but damn. 130#. a 125 will yank your arms off at that weight.

and unless youre buying new, or at least less than a couple years old and know it to be mint condition, the resounding answer on buying a USED older 250F is 'hell no'. ticking timebomb.

At your size and weight the YZ125 is a perfect bike and you're probably right, the YZ250 is probably too much power if you're just starting out.

I am 5'9" and 160 lbs without gear and own both the YZ125 & YZ250. I have more fun on the YZ125 than any other bike. The amount you'll learn riding that little bike will make you a faster, smarter, smoother and safer rider in the future.

The only reason you should go for the 250 two stroke is if you have already been racing and battling for the lead in the 250 B (intermediate) class at most tracks. Otherwise, as a Beginner or Novice, the 125 will teach you things the other bikes will not. Corner speed and carrying momentum around the track is the most important.

Go for the 125, ride it for 2 or 3 years and then try a 250F or a 250 two-stroke.

You're pretty similar to me, except I stand a towering 1" taller than you and live in the south lol
I use to have a KX250F, I loved the bike don't get me wrong. But I couldn't go fast on it. Got a KTM 150 and won my first race on it.
I'd suggest you pick up a 125, IMO a newer KTM. But in all honesty, they're all good. So pick your favorite color. I just like my Katoom alot Smile

So you have the basics or riding down already on your 150.

At 5'9" and 130, I think the 125, 144 or 150 two stroke is perfect for your size. Any 125cc two stroke has a LOT more power than your CRF150. The 250F has a little more than the 125, but it also has a lot more weight.

Like colintrax said, the KTM 150SX is also great if you'd like an orange bike.

Back in 1989 I raced a 89 cr125 and 89 kx500 and I was all of 130lbs with my gear on.
The 500 was definitely a handful, but when I got back on the 125 I was wfo plus pushing with mylegs like Fred Flintstone did in his car, cause the 125 didn't even feel like it was going after racing the 500. Lol....

Good luck with your purchase, and stay safe !!!

im 5'10 130ish, get a 250f. the 2 stroke will make u better, but you will want a 250f soon enough to keep up with the times. most 2 strokes havent changed in awhile, while the 250f are top of the line.

Everyone telling this kid to buy a 250 2stroke needs their head read.

Get a 125 mate, you will learn more about riding than any other bike, and if shit turns pear shaped (you have a huge crash) it wont sling you to far Smile

In the end with maintenance I know with two strokes you have to rebuild them that the only reason it's kind of turning me off of it

A 250F is a bitch to maintain. Get a YZ125, they are bullet proof. I am 20, 156lbs and ride a KX125, probably going to keep it forever, lol.

You don't have to rebuild 2strokes that often, and its super easy to rebuild them compared to 4strokes.

Modern 4strokes are super highly strung nowdays (tuned to the edge of breaking) - they need to be rebuilt just as often if not more - a very different machine to an xr250 your pops may have owned etc.. you also need to change the oil on a 4stroke more often generally.

Would a bike from like the early 2000's be okay if its been rebuilt?

Well I would go with a 175cc ,3 stroke. It is right in between. 2 valves , expansion chamber, and you still run pre mix so the best of both world's. Pretty sure Zing Ying Shing motors makes it for 2016.
