1997 Windham (125)
1998 Dowd (125)
1999 Sellards (125)
2000 Tortelli (250)
2001 Windham (250)
2002 Ferry (426)
2003 Windham (450)
2004 Reed (450)
2005 Windham (450)
2006 Windham (450)

So there you have it, all of the outdoor national champions that woulda, coulda, shoulda been had it not been for that angry little red headed elf Ricky Carmichael. We always think of Reed as his main rival but as you can see, he actually took five championships from Windham. Poor KW. He must have nightmares about RC. I know I would.

Poor Windham was born right between McGrath and Carmichael. What awful luck. I think the 05 and 06 outdoor championships would have went to Reed had Carmichael not been there. If I remember right, Reed had injuries he otherwise would have rode through, but dropped out because he knew he couldn't catch Carmichael, which gave Windham 2nd. Honestly if it weren't for Ricky, we'd be talking about how Reed is the GOAT right now. Just my opinion of course.

No, but for a nominal fee I would be happy to compile that for you. I need some new number plate backgrounds. Wanna hook a brother up?

I really wish Ferry would have gotten that one in 02. So does Steve "the happening" Matthes.

I think you're right. Not sure on the years but I do recall things being that way. It is entirely possible that the list of guys who got 2nd might have been different if RC had not actually been there.

I wonder what KWs role in the sport will be after he retires. He doesnt seem like the car racing type, nor the mx school type. Maybe manage a lites team?

Ferry had a huge advantage (IMO of course) that year because he was on the 426 and most people were still clinging to the false belief that the 250 was the way to go. Funny, thinking back to how when Yamaha offered Ferry that factory ride, he had to "settle" for riding the four stroke. People still thought of the bike as a disadvantage during 02. It wasn't until about 03 or 04 that it became OBVIOUS to everyone that the 450 was the way to do (indoors and out).

I admit, that 426 was not like the 450s of today. That thing had terrible handling compared to the current bikes but the power was still AWESOME back then, especially his factory bike.

Yeah definitely. I also think McGrath would have had more motivation in 2002 and beyond had Carmichael not dominated in 2001. Possibly 2 more championships and 20 more wins to McGrath's all time records if not for Carmichael.

In 2002 MX, I remember at least 12 motos where Carmichael was WAY ahead of Ferry in 2nd, who was WAY ahead of the 3rd place rider. Same goes for Reed in 2004 MX.

There was a certain CR250 with a "shitty case reed engine" that yarded that 426. Woodpecker on the shroud. little ginger on it. the fuck was his name?

shit, itll come to me. Randy, Robbie, Ricardo, Russell,

In your honest opinion, what are the final standings if you don't do that photo shoot before Daytona? If I remember correctly you were up by 20 points when that happened.

And that is the exact reason he is the GOAT of MX. I really dont see some one doing what he did in motocross any time soon. Same goes for MCs record.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see K-Dub doing the rider coach thing for Factory Connection and Honda.
I also think he would be a natural for working as a commentator......Kevin is smooth on the mic and you couldn't ask for a more class guy.

DV you were on fire that year, I just watched it on an old "Bar to Bar" video. I remember you had that championship if not for dumb luck! A crash during photo shoot or something?

Funny enough, out of all the riders driving or looking to drive KW, to me, seems like the guy that would transition to 4 wheels quite well. I'd like to see him stay in the sport of SX/MX behind the microphone maybe or a team manager. I also think he'd be the type to wanna stay home with the family more too.

You can't guarantee that those 2nd place guys would have won........Look at the 07 outdoors when Langston came from nowhere once Stewart was out and the title was wide open.

Some guys are just second place guys and will find a guy to beat them regardless of the competition.

I agree about the last part. KW has been on the road doing this racing thing for most of his life. He has a family. Not sure the allure of all that "fame and fortune" involved with being a team manager is enough to keep him away from home for most of the year. I think the guy just loves riding his bike and THAT is the reason he keeps doing it. But you never know, DV became a team manager after retiring. He could go either way. One thing a lot of us bozos probably underestimate though, is the stress involved with being a team manager. I would guess that it is worse than being the racer because as a racer, you can control some things and are only responsible for your own performance. As a team manager, you're responsible for the performance of OTHER people. I wouldn't want that job....unless they were gonna pay me five figures.

No offense dude, but that is a dumb question. Of COURSE he thought he was gonna win the championship. Jesus. He had everyone covered that year.

It would have been close. Of course the racer in him says he would have won. The key word in my statement was the word honest. Me personally, I won't bet against RC for anything.

I think it would be funny to see KW with Emig in the booth. I do have a sneaking suspicion Visine might start a limited ad campaign for sponsoring our spokesmen Smile

have you ever noticed how when you walk up to a group of guys having a conversation, it sort of stops and the guys all disperse?
