My son's 14' YZ450 did that one time when it was brand new. It just cut off and wouldn't start. Removed the fuel cap, and it started right up. The cap on the YZ's has an integrated one-way valve.

Probably smoking because it needed more fuel to burn. No fuel getting to the FI?

Happened to me on a TTR before. Breather hose was pinched.

I'm glad he went back on the track to finish the race. Some guys would have thrown the bike down and cried.

I thought it was funny that Webb knew the problem, not his mechanic haha

Probably heat build up in the cylinder and exhaust. I've seen bikes smoke after they've been running. It must have been the gas cap if that's what got it running again. If the bike had locked up they wouldn't have gotten it back on the track.

I was very impressed by webbs composure durring the situation and durring the interview after. He knows he's still got it covered. Champ material for sure.

Anyone that's had that happen remembers it. My pitbike would do it.

Gas becomes vapor from extreme heat, bike dies. Could see this happening at this level, those engines are far from what you find on the showroom floor.

Ya, he pretty much reacted perfectly. Still confident and didn't give any other rider something to build off.

Nope, actually familiar with this, have a small engine repair degree/cert. paid for by AF when I was bored stationed in AZ, but Cooper could also be summarizing/generalizing what actually happened, could be another gas/engine related issue. But sounds like it based on removing the gas cap solving it. I did google the definition of a douche after your response. Jk.

Cooper handled that very well. I'm sure he'll be back with a vengeance.

If Yamaha used a standard gas cap like normal would it have been a problem? I'm not familiar with those bikes and havnt had an issue on my Hondas.

It still has a vent hose like other bikes, just cap is hidden, I rode a 12,15 and 16 but realized 2 strokes are where its at Wink if anything a cooling issue with the bike or gas, makes me think back to boiling gas during dungey's outdoor 250F outdoor season.

It doesn't.

Kudos to Coop for a smooth, politically correct cover-up on what appears to be yet another 15,000 rpm fooper failure. The blue death smoke implies a bit more of a problem than vapor lock?

Just my 2 cents...

Bikes don't vapor lock in 12 minutes at 50 degrees ambient. Yamaha's have had their share of mystery bogs and cut outs due to wiring harness issues since 14. Watch in the pits- some blue teams remove the body work and wash most of the bike by hand to avoid introducing water to the harness. I know if one team that resorted to removing the harness every time they washed the bike. He's lucky it happened coming out of a corner and not on the face of a jump.

But he rode it across the finish line- so it didn't grenade.

That's something how Cooper said "I'm no quitter" then started the bike and rode off to show it didn't grenade...

Yamaha had a commercial on shortly after that...Laughing
