Does anyone else notice Craig's List and the like are crowded with tons of modern used mx bikes and nobody seems to be buying them? I have one for sale currently with no chance of it ever selling due to it being 10 others just like it, all active, and they all have been posted for months, just like mine. What's going on? Is there no market for used bikes anymore? Is the economy bouncing back so everyone wants new? I've checked a bunch of different cities and they all are stacked with used bikes for sale.

What do you guys think the reason is? Are 2-3 year old MX bikes throw-aways now?

The trends I see are what most people probably see as well.

Used 250F is worth absolutely nothing.
Used 450s will sell from one vet to another vet
Used two-stroke will be selling for fucking sticker price in the next 12-18 months. (3,500 for a 2004 CR250? all day long)
Vintage bikes are going thru the fucking roof, especially if the bike falls into the "newest" year of a particular AHRMA class. don't even think about fucking with an YZ465, they're worth more than a 2013 new "left-over" YZ250F.

I feel due to the economy, the average riders don't have $2,500 to $5,000 in liquid cash anymore to buy used bikes. Bikes under $2k seem to sell easily, but anything over that gets tough.

Unless you are willing to under-price the your bike, it's going to be a tough sale.

It seems like Ebay has the strongest market right now because bikes are still selling at close to book value. Just a pain not being able to deal locally in most cases.

I have a mint 07 RM250 that I paid $2000 + $400 shipping for and I have had 3 people in the last few months offer me $3200-$3500 for it. That is mind blowing to me. What's even more mind blowing is that I turned them all down.

I don't think it's mind blowing - rather smart on your part. Sure, you would profit $1K, but if you really think about it, what's $3,500 going to get you in the used bike market? I guarantee it's nothing as nice as a mint 07 RM250.

I'm in that exact boat. I have a 07 CR250 and a 12 CRF450R. I'm trying to sell the 450 to get some cash to put towards a new 15. I can't give the thing away. I think for it's condition (im a vet) it's reasonably worth ~4800. Nobody took it at that price or 4400. Now I have it listed for $3900 and still nothing. In the classifieds along side mine are 10 others just like it in every city across the US. I'm not prepared to stack new bikes in my garage like cord wood. I paid almost 8k for that thing in 2012. That's expensive garage furniture!

My 07 2 stroke probably has MAYBE 20 original hours on it. Showroom like condition. I have to fight people away from it with a stick.

Our stories are almost identical. I'm a 39 year old vet MXer as well. I have an equally mint 2011 RMZ450 and at the moment, it's probably worth as much as my 07 250! LaughingLaughingLaughing

I can't complain tho, I love them both and I'm lucky to have one of each.

Yeah the 05-07 CR 250's are worth gold (at least all the sellers think they are) for a bike that most don't think was a great bike. I want one but will not pay 3k for it.

On the flip side, I sold 2 125 2 strokes and a 250 two stroke.

03 RM 125 Paid $1300 1.5 years ago sold it for $1600.00
06 CR125 Paid $1575 2 years ago sold it for $1600.00
07 RM 250 paid $1500 3 years ago sold it for 1550.00 (sold a full rekluse clutch from it when I bought it for $500)

So the used low priced 2 stroke market is quit good. I really undersold them. NO one really tried to talk me down any. Had an old granny wanting to make payments on the CR 125 though. lOL

Probably a seasonal issue too. People looking to sell their bikes this time of year for holiday money and upgrade and whatnot. The prime selling time is in February and March when people generally get tax returns, raises, bonuses etc. . . Everyone is looking to drop stupid money right when they get it.

I feel a final year 250 2 banger (pick a color other than blue or orange) in unmolested condition will bring upwards of $2500 in the current market. Most buyers are looking for them and can't find one that hasn't been torn up and left in a barn.

A 4 stroke that needs valves soon isn't that hard to come by. lol

I've had my '11 yz250f for sale (less than 30 hours) for almost 2 months on craigslist. It is cheaper than any other '10 and '11 in the surrounding areas...almost $1k cheaper than most '12 and '13's. And it is in better shape with lower hours than all of the surrounding bikes. All of those other bikes are WAY overpriced and I still can't even sell mine.

i just went thru this with our 85s. too many for sale and so i reduced the price to sell which at that point i felt like i was giving them away and another issue is then you get a different category of people interested that try to lowball your newer lower price. so i end up selling all the good parts off them and tried to put back to stock as much as possible so it didn't hurt as much. i hate the guys who stand you up, no shows, etc really burned me out this time. i ended up trading a prime bike into the dealership and let my pride go by the wayside then let some d bag on craigslist get something for nothing

one thing though is i have never tried to sell a bike this time of year. and i have always had good luck selling our bike within 3 weeks or less and got what i wanted out of them. plus having a down payment on a new bike i just wanted to pay it off and pick it up soon so i was in a hurry

yeah i had the same issue. i would tell people go look at those other bikes and then come look at mine and youll see why im asking more. most of the time youll know who a lot of others bikes are or you plainly tell what kind of shape a lot of bikes are in the photos.the best one though is when they want it but cant afford it so i would say, well i can put a stock pipe and wheels back on and lower the price for you but they would still want it the way it was lol what a joke

that's not surprising . i sold my mint shape 2006 ricky Carmichael 250 in like 5 minutes . had 20 calls in about a few hrs. some bikes people are lurking for and when they arise they are gone. just the other day i saw a mint Honda ct 70 for $2000.

I think the hardest scenario to sell in is if you have a 250f or 450f that is only a year or two old. It seems like you have to give them away, especially when some dealers have leftover stock like a 2014 rmz250 for $5400 brand new.

im currently in the market for a ktm 50 for my son and i cant seem to find anything that hasn't been torn up or ridden by some 16 year old.

When is the best time to buy a 50? i know theirs got to be a time in the season where kids are moving up classes and want to get rid of theses things.

Just sold my 03 cr250. Had all kinds of guys wanting to trade me 08-09 250F's. One guy even said his 09 RMZ250 just needed the valves adjusted and it was good to go. Laughing

Ding, ding, ding! No one wants to buy now and stare at it all winter. No point.

The other seasonal issue is what a few others have pointed out. Leftover 2013 and 2014's are going for 60-70% of retail right now. I've seen numerous 250f's for $5200-$5700 OTD and 450's for not much more. That kills the used market for a few months - why would I buy a used one for $4000 when I can get a brand new one for $1500 more? The dollars and cents difference isn't enough to make a buyer take the chance on used.

Agreed. I think there are only two kinds of buyers....

- the young kid or blue collar working guy who will pay $3500, at most, for a bike

OR

- guys with money or avid moto enthusiasts that aren't scared away by the $8k price tag of new bike, and that are going to buy a new bike every year or two regardless of price

That leaves no market for a slightly used 1 or 2 year old bike in the $4000-$5500 range. If that's what you think your bike is worth, just keep it for a few more years until you're willing to take $3200 for it. No sense in dealing w/ the headache of trying to sell it.

I listed my 2007 honda crf250 on craigslist in late march and it sold about a week later for 2900.00. I didn't think that was a bad price considering I paid 3200.00 for it in May of 2008.

I have to fight people away from it with a stick.

jobless recovery kills the used bike market. Same here in Idaho for 4 strokes.

im currently in the market for a ktm 50 for my son and i cant seem to find anything that hasn't been torn up or ridden by some 16 year old.

When is the best time to buy a 50? i know theirs got to be a time in the season where kids are moving up classes and want to get rid of theses things.
Me too. I'm looking everywhere for a sx mini or cobra jr. I seen tons of them at the track but there isn't shit out there for sale. You can get a brand new 14 SX mini for $2975 but then people are trying to sell there used 13 and 14's for like $2500-$3000. But, like you said. They are nowhere to be found.

There was some jackass around here trying to sell a 2012 kawi 250F for $9,500 on CL. The ad said the bike cost $9,000 new and had $1,500 in parts. I wanted to call and mess with him but didn't feel like wasting my time.
