In the FMF Titanium boat anchor shenanigans thread someone requested that I weigh my new Buds carbon silencer....And here is what I got

The Buds is about 1/2" shorter and the pro circuit...and the Pro Circuit has some hours on it.

Bike is an 06 KX 250

Are they both brand new? I know they do pick up considerable weight with oil in the packing over time, so the numbers can be deceiving.

It has maybe 3 hours on the packing...

Heres one that was never supposed to be light. It is an fmf q stealth for a yz 250. 3lb, 8oz BUT, it turns a big bore yz 300 into something you can ride in a neighborhood.

Never supposed to be light, but quiet enough to ride in a neighborhood.

A secret with silencers...You can change one in less than five minutes. Different ones for different conditions. This one when you for sure dont want to hear about noise. Also, use this one when you'd like full power. It does its job with mass, and not having to restrict to keep quiet.

I suspect the new one he was bitching about uses this technology and maybe knocks a pound off what I have here. These are not like the old fashioned spark arrestor silencers. These make power.

I wish I was such a good rider that I could notice 1, 2, or even 3 pounds difference in the overall weight of a bike.

I dont think anyone has to be good to feel weight loss. The good rider can deal with the heavy weight better.

In this thread, no one is trying to make their bike light, so no need to worry, or mention losing body weight. Maybe its ok to go ahead and skip that cool line this time for whomever is thinking about posting it.

id rather have a bike that doesn't fall flat on its face after the mid range then the weight savings of a shorty. Thats really what the discussion should be about. How did shorty pipes become so popular.

I had a friend in the uk who sent me a bunch of silencers for my yz 250. There was one very beautiful carbon fiber one that he sent. No brand name. What I found was by the time it was made strong enough to be even somewhat durable, weight was as much as anything.

The anchor sized one from fmf is the best I ever used with regards to power. Its far better than anything else I tried that was the normal size, old style construction. It just happened to be very quiet,

Is your buds tight? I ordered one and it's moving where the boot connects the pipe

The easiest way to get a lighter silencer is just to cut the end off. Never read any reports that said silencer length affect performance, only the noise of the bike. With that said, can't see the silencer being the part worth saving weight on. They're already quite light.

I remember reading in a magazine about Ezra Lusk bike. His mechanic welded a bead on on the tip of the silencer adding about 1/8" or so and was said that he noticed a difference.

What is it about carbon silencers that causes them to have limited durability?

Yep, some fmf shortys used to have a washer welded onto the tip to trick the silencer into actin like a regular length. The PC shorty used to have a smaller outlet too. Sometimes these methods would increase the chances of detonation.

All the pc shorty silencer's I owned fell apart.

The regular length fmf silencer was exactly the same dimensions as stock on an rm250

Some of the resins/material used aren't capable taking the heat & some of them are just too thin.

Btw, a 1 pound silencer is soooooo easy to make. And, it can last, too!

I'll talk to a pipe guy about it...

Its doable, but probably not for a retail of 129.00. As we've seen, once that price gets exceeded, the shit hits the fan.

A one pound silencer? Pfffffttttt!

You'll have to do better than that in these modern times. Yamaha made this 14 1/2 inch long 15 ounce masterpiece back in the 70's I believe for the road race program. Thanks Stillwelding! Possibly going on my 240 pound tub o shit 81 YZ250 H.

Carbon can, aluminum core, machined magnesium inlet and outlet, aluminum end cap retainer and aluminum bracket and screws.

Of course 15 ounces won't cut it on a 159 pound CR125 so this 6.75 inch beauty will hopefully finish up in the 8 ounce range.

I personally prefer running outdoor or standard links aftermarket silencers on all of my two strokes not a huge fan of the Shorty although the Shorty craze started from Supercross the shorties are designed to increase low-end bottom power and mid range shit for extra boost out of corners to make jumps they do not do anything good for Top end and overrev I love top end overrev on my bikes so I've always seek out those Stannard length silencers currently my bike is a Shorty on it and the overrev is suffered on my yz250 I would really like to get my hands on a pro circuit standard length silencer to run on my bike and will gladly trade my Shorty to anyone willing to swap them otherwise I'll have to save up to buy one but I'm getting rid of it as soon as I can afford to

Let me know Joe if I can send you some ultra trick packing and steel wool so you don't have to repack that thing for a LONG time. Not sure if there's room in that tiny space for steel wool but you can make that determination.
