Canard Undergoes Successful Surgery on Broken Left Arm
TORRANCE, Calif. (March 24, 2015)– Team Honda HRC’s Trey Canard underwent successful surgery today at the Oklahoma Sports Science & Orthopedics (OSSO) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to repair the radius in his left arm that was fractured in a crash during round 12 of the AMA Supercross series at Detroit’s Ford Field on March 21. During the operation, doctors applied a carbon fiber plate, replacing another plate that had been applied in November 2013, following a different arm injury. In addition, doctors inserted eight screws and performed a bone graft to ensure optimal healing. With an estimated recovery time of six to eight weeks, the Oklahoman will immediately begin rehabilitation in preparation for the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, which begins May 16. At this point, Team Honda HRC has no plans to use a replacement rider during the Supercross series.

“The surgery went really well, and we’re hoping for the best in terms of recovery time. The doctors said it will likely be six to eight weeks, but we’ll have a better idea after seeing the X-rays. I start physical therapy tomorrow and am going to do everything I can to get back to action as soon as possible. I’d really like to thank everyone for their love and support.”

Dan Betley
Team Manager

“Obviously, everyone at Honda was saddened to see Trey’s Supercross run end the way it did. He had been extremely fast all year and was having the best season of his 450 career. After consulting with his doctor on Monday, it was determined that surgery was the best course of action, and we’re pleased that the operation went well. Now all we can do is wait for the recovery process and set our sights on the outdoors. If we know one thing about Trey, it’s that he’ll come back stronger and hungrier than ever. Everyone on the team can’t wait for him to be back.”

If you read the release you'd note that they replaced an old plate with a new one. I'm no doctor, but to me that would suggest there was either damage to the old one, it was required to make the repair, or the new one makes for a more effective repair.

Also, who wouldn't want a carbon fiber upgrade? Smile

Ok, i'm no Dr, but I thought 6 weeks without a plate was normal heal time for someone his age.

According to Wikipedia, 'Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone in order to repair bone fractures that are extremely complex, pose a significant health risk to the patient, or fail to heal properly.'

Could the plate from the previous injury been bent with the impact TC41 arm endured in the crash and could some of the screws pulled or moved within the bone causing the need for bone grafting?

When I blew my tibial plateau off of my left tibia, they also sprinkled in some bone graft powder.

Bondo used in the older models while newer models get carbon fiber.

Same when I broke my tibial spine. I gotta say I am happy that let go instead of my ACL...granted I was all of 14 at the time.

Good point. Now with the reduction in weight he can move it around like the KTMs do to make minimum. That should fix his starts. On a real not im glad he is doing well.
