I have the chance to trade my 09 yz 250 2t, for a 2011 yz 450 4t. I'm a 45 year old vet b class rider, and like the ease of maintenance on my yz 250 2t. But I love how easy the 4t are to ride. I've heard some good things about 2011 yz 450s, reliability being one of them. I'm not in the shape I once was and really have to be on my toes on the 2t. But have not jumped on the 4t band wagon yet. But think I would like to try. Just hard giving up the 2t, that's all I've ever ridden, but they just wear me out anymore. I can't afford a new bike due to my son races, and he runs 65cc and 85cc classes. I put almost all the money into his racing. I just race once in awhile, and love to ride with him. But would like to push it up a notch in 2015 and see how I do. My boy wants me to race more, and see his old man winning back like when I was young. So what Im asking is is this a good trade? It's an even up trade, my 250 2t is in great shape with lots of mods, and the 450 is in great shape. I'm thinking I'll have an easier time going fast on the 450. Just wanted some help making up my mind, thanks

Give it a try. Worst case scenario you decide next year that the 450 isn't as much fun, you sell it and get another smoker. Unless you are really attached to your 09, why not give it a whirl?

I've gone the 4-stroke route 3 times, and always came back to 2-strokes. But they were good bikes too and I don't regret giving them a chance otherwise I'd still be wondering if I should or not.

May as well go for it dude, it's practically brand new and if you don't enjoy it you'll have more than enough money to trade it back in for a 2-stroke.

At one point in my life I owned a 250F and a 125 but one had to go, so it was bye-bye for the thumper as I found I performed better on the machines I grew up riding.

If your heart is set on 2-strokes that much then you'll be back on one soon after!

Its a long story, but essentially I just did the same things. Traded the 2 stroke for the 4 stroke.

I have already received more flak than I care to say over it. I was, and still am, a HUGE ambassador of two strokes. But when the 2 stroke blew up my father-in-law let me borrow his 09 CRF 450 to ride while it was getting fixed. All I will say is the proof was in the lap times. I am easily 2-3 seconds a lap faster on 450, and when I am going I have more fun, which is what this sport is all about anyways. My father-in-law noticed and said I can have that and he will take my 2 stroke if I prefer, and that's what I did. I may regret it one day, but the last month has been some of the most enjoyable riding I have had in a long time

Either way your getting a killer deal, and nothing is permanent. You have a very "high class" problem on your hands.

As a 42 year old Vet B rider, I can tell you the stroker is more forgiving and will probably get you around the track faster over the course of a moto. Yammies have a great reputation for reliability on their four strokes as well.

I'm trying to keep the two stroke faith by rebuilding a vintage 125 : ) !

flywheels take the initial hit out of the 2 strokes. maybe spend 100$ on a flywheel before you trade? or ride somebody that has one? my dad has a 06 with a flywheel/gnarly pipe and its a totally different machine

I'd say it's close enough to a fair trade given the information you've given us. I am a convert from 4 to 2. I'm not gonna lie, I miss the low end power. But I find the 2 stroke more of a challenge and like the way it races off road.

Are you racing motocross or cross country? Twosmoke30 makes a valid point. If you're not totally sold on the decision to trade and you like your bike, you might try a flywheel weight.

I'm doing mostly mx, I would like to try the 4t, and the book value is almost 900.00 more than my 09 2 stroke. If I don't like it, I'll be ahead of the game anyway, and could always get another 2t.

i currently have both bikes, and looking from your angle, if the 450 is in good nic i'd do it. the 450 is alot easier to ride and honestly theres not that much maintenance, yamaha build a pretty bulletproof engine. the yz450 are a very wide bike though which is a big thing to take in consideration.

I did the same thing, traded a 2002 CR250 for a 2010 KXF 450. Loved it at first, but trying to keep that big 450 up to pace over the course of a moto was tough, turning and compression braking wore me out. I sold it and bought a KXF250 and loved it for a while too. I finally went back to the smoker. I would love to own all three but the KX250 I have now covers all areas well. Trade and see, you may love it, you may not...but it'll be fun finding out. Smile

2 strokes are fun but they just take so much energy to ride. I have ridden 2 strokes most of my life and finally bought a 350 sxf and I will not go back. Even hearing 2 strokes at the track now makes me feel tired thinking about riding them.

Thanks for all the help on this, I decided to pull the trigger on the 2011 yz 450f, the guy traded me even up, done deal. What little bit I got to ride it,it was smooth, and I think I'm gonna like it. Just easy to cruise around on compared to my 09 yz 250 2t. Thanks again!!!!!!

That's a nice looking bike. I had the 08 and I probably put 400-450 hours on it before I had engine problems at the end of 2012. . . The bike will last a long time. Oil changes and air filter cleanings on the regular is all that is required.
