Problem is if Honda actually produced that bike, it would out sell the 450.

Funny...they will just let KTM sell all of the 2 strokes that people don't want.

That was pretty convincing right up until they said the price point would be sub-5K. Honda would sell all they could make at $8K.

I would still buy a Yamaha YZ250 2 stroke over a KTM 250 2 stroke any day.

Honda claims to have discontinued two strokes due to environmental issues.

That is as hard to believe as the notion twin exhausts make a bike handle better.

I think the real reason is higher profits on four stroke motorcycles, parts, and repairs at the dealer. The lack of quality two stroke bikes from Japan is hard to ignore, considering the success of KTM in this area. Seems like Japanese management at the big four are sticking their heads in the sand - their dirt bike and parts prices are way up, but their sales are down.

A new Honda high performance two stroke 300 would blow the roof off of dirt bike sales, I don't think there is too much dispute over that.

Based on existing tooling and a push to sweep the market early, initial estimates put the suggested retail price under $5,000, and the rumor is that the bike will be street legal in all 50 states

This gives it away

It would have to be a hell of a lot cheaper to outsell the 450. Just because Vital loves Two Strokes, obviously the rest of the world does not or KTM and Yamaha would be sold out of every oil/fuel burning bike every year and the demand would call for more to be built. So far, that hasn't happened. What makes the 450's sell so well, they are everything bikes.

That's what they should do, make a new 250 2-stroke, announce it way in advance that it's going to be a limited edition on sale for a year or so, get everybody amped up and saving their money, then watch the stacks come in. (I'm not being that serious)

How much R&D would they really have to do to make a new 250 with FI? My guess would be not that much, but that's purely a guess.

It isn't the amount of tailpipes, but what comes out of the tailpipe. California sets the standard for them all. Two strokes in current iteration puke a lot of things out the back end. In short, easier to make all the bikes meet the toughest standard rather than a few.

They could outsource to Malaysia like their street bikes, cheaper to build cheaper to sell and provide greater sales on the parts floor due. The CRF line still comes from Japan. So profit isn't their aim here.

here is the Aussie figures, as the no where else in the world publicly release them that i can find,

http://www.mcnews.com.au/sales-figures-revised/

notice even in the enduro bikes, the 350//500 KTM four stroke out sell the 300 2 stroke, and the 450 is only 2 behind,

the only 2 stroke to make the top 10 in motocross is KTM50SX

I think a few of you are missing the boat. The fact is nobody knows how a new 250/300 2t would sell. The "new" smokers offered are old. A DI/FI would change the game. I would buy one. What's the point of buying a 2014 yz250 or sx250 if the 06 YZ is just as good?
Sleds have new, latest and greatest tech.... it's bad ass! Why in the hell don't we?

This ^^^
Why buy new when you can find a used version for $3K less that is basically the exact same, and the parts that'll need to be replaced (tires, chain, sprockets, etc) are things you'd probably swap out on a new bike anyways. People buy new for new features.
Not saying one will out sell the other, but I just wish there were more options being developed. Just because it may not be the top seller doesn't mean it won't sell.
