Anyone else notice that after his main event win on his way up to the podium he pulled ear plugs out of his ears?

Is this a common thing for riders to use, do any of you use them?

It is very common in road racing..I am trying to adapt it over to my dirt riding but I usually forget to bring my ear plugs. It is nice though.

I noticed it too. I thought it was odd, because I have never seen that done before, but I would imagine the noise can get pretty intense.

Smart kid! The hearing in my right ear is severely damaged from riding and being around motorcycles for 40 years.

They use ear plugs to help them concentrate on their breathing and racing forward

I like riding with earplugs as well, just like mentioned above, it helps me concentrate better. Mostly while riding my Street bike/Ninja on track days.

be nice when they have all this free time in the live process of showing these races that they would show a tec inspection process of the bikes. INCLUDING sound testing.

want to promote the sport to the masses as good for everyone? try that speed, or who ever. I am sure spectators watching on TV would rather see something technical then some guys house and garage.???????

Transworld Shadow- Eli Tomac

Don't know how to post videos.

But at around 2:20 he says that he started using them when he transitioned to big bikes because his ears would ring at night.

Those weren't ear plugs. He was listening to The Carpenters on his iPod.

with earplugs in, it is easier to hear your bike.
they seem to cut down the super loud white noise.

I'll betcha your favorite musician wears them too

Forgive me for being smart, but the reason for the ear plugs isn't because his bike is hurting his precious little ears. Jesus Christ. Do you guys even ride???

The reason for wearing them is to block out the sound of the OTHER bikes so you can concentrate on your own race and race-forward.

But I loved the comment about it being The Carpenters. LMFAO!

Bright kid!

At least when he gets to be my age he won't have to turn up the tv so loud to hear Emig over the loud crowd noise in the background!

I always wore ear plugs while road racing and street riding and it was really nice. Honeslty it's so quiet and peaceful that you began to think you are going slow and I always rode faster w/ them in.

As a side note when I had my ears tested in my late 20's they told me my hearing was well above the average for my age range so I guess they were doing a good job of protecting me.

I've tried to wear them in the dirt but I just can't adapt just yet.

whether it's to block out his bike or the bikes around him it's a good idea especially in a closed stadium.

If all the OEMs and all the pipe guys got together and made quiet pipes everyone would have to run them. They don't have to be street bike quiet but at least bring the sound down to a non torturous level.

I started wearing them when I switched too 4S. The foam ones fall out, but the custom ones are nice. Like the Leatt, don't leave home without them.

@teggers, if the foamers fall out, you aren't wearing them properly.
read the directions.
you've got to twist them and jam 'em in deep.
If you do this and they fall out, you don't have ear canals.

@void main, yes he does.
they are custom jobbers with built in monitors.

Naw, most of our favorite musicians wear custom molded in-ear phones, not ear plugs. That way they can control the mix and dB levels directly, vs. performing on a live stage with potentially harmful dB levels.

They're like iPod ear buds, but about $700 for the ones with triple drivers, for crystal clear bass tones.

Sensaphonics - check out their musicians page, under 'clients' Smile

@voodo27, ha . They wear them to save their hearing, same as the broke musicians I was talking about. ha ha
Good for ET for wearing them, I definitely think that puts him at a slight advantage.
His dad is a mountain bike champion, Eli might just be a bit smarter than all the other racers with redneck genetics. Smile

I don't wanna rain all over your parade but my Dad's 2011 CRF450 is significantly more quiet than my stock muffler CR250. I literally have trouble hearing the bike while riding it after being on a 2-stroke or my 09 CRF450.

No, he was listening to a track of 2 stroke sounds instead of these god awful sounding POS bikes.
