Time to change SX points structure?

Maybe its time for more of a premium in points for winning. How about 30 points for first then the current points 25,22,20,19... on down to 21st. Then maybe to keep the heats interesting give 1 point for first only in each heat. This would push guys a little more for wins and not just being consistent. Any ideas?

What I'm waiting for is someone to suggest that we have a playoff structure like they've done in NHRA, NASCAR, and (gulp) Arenacross.

I think he's going off of Stew having more wins than Villopoto = better points position than he has right now but that's why they run the races! If you can't race to the rules and win why do you need to make some up to win?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say if that's what the point structure was this year, RV would have more wins than James.

It's funny, the "fastest man on the planet" and most naturally talented ever to throw a leg over... can't win championships anymore and needs the points changed so he can! Classic.

I am a rv fan, but I think the f1 structure has merit
1st : 25 points
2nd : 18 points
3rd : 15 points
4th : 12 points
5th : 10 points
6th : 8 points
7th : 6 points
8th : 4 points
9th : 2 points
10th : 1 point

Edit: my only fear going this way in sx would be increasing the injury rate, which is bad enough already.

Tough line to walk. Make it too close and guys don't necessarily jockey for the win as much. Make it too big and a couple W's lands you a huge lead. I think it's fine where it's at, I wouldn't mind one throw-away race or something. I know that sounds un-American, but in motorsports guys face the possibility of mechanical DNFs every race. I'd rather know that the guy rocking the #1 at the final round earned it because he was the best rider, not because some other guy had a bike issue that cost him 25 points.

We might as well let each rider throw out their two worst scores...RV still leads I imagine. Either way you slice it I think RV is still the points leader.

Here's the standings based on 30 points for win, 25 for second, etc.

1. Villopoto 306
2. Stewart 269
3. Dungey 260
4. Roczen 242
5. Brayton 216
6. Barcia 195
7. Short 181
8. Tickle 137
9. Hahn 134
10. Reed 127

It moved Stewart ahead of Dungey, but otherwise didn't change anything in the standings.

RV currently has a 33-point lead. Under the proposed revised system, he'd have a 37-point lead.

I'm okay with the main points as they are, I wish they would award points for the heats, semis, n LCQ

Heat race :
1- 15
2- 12
3- 10
4 - 8

Semis

1- 7
2- 6
3- 5
4- 4
5- 3

LCQ
1- 2
2- 1

Or something like this......make the qualifying races a little more exciting and for riders behind in the points chase it has the potential to allow a rider to narrow the gap by going for heat wins.

The only thing I would think about changing would maybe be to have a 1 drop race type deal, just because that would lessen the likelihood that a freak mechanical deal (Dungeys chain a couple years ago) decides a championship.

i think points for pole, points for laps lead and heat wins. nothing crazy, just a few extra. sponsor the points when awarded. progressive pole points etc. the one i dont get is mx. i would like all riders in a national to get at least 1 point.

I guess it comes down to why you're getting points, for winning or making the final, past tenth at St Louis they were being lapped.

What it comes down to is what are you trying to reward with the points system, consistency or being at the top of the field. At the moment I think it rewards consistency more than winning, it's a fair enough call you think they deserve that, it's damn tough racing.

I think it'd make for more changes in the points leaders board if points were more f1 style.

Interestingly it doesn't make a huge diff RV/JS, 216/191 or 25 difference vs 36. Though Dungey gets knocked down to 172

I think they should reverse the gate picks for all the guys who qualify. If James wins the heat like he always does then he gets last gate pick and then they all go in reverse order so the quick guys have to make their way through the pack.

For 2014 Formula 1 are trying a new concept whereby for the final round they award 1st place double points. Its places huge value on 1st position.

If this was the case this year in SX and if Stewart keeps his win streak alive it would force Villopotto to race for wins and not play it safe. The final round would sure be a must win situation....

Something to elaborate on.

they tried that in late 80s. the fast guys all tanked it on purpose. it doesn't work.
