Thoughts on the ALTA?

What are your thoughts on the ALTA redshift MX? Do you see yourself on one in the future? Will it take over MX? How far will the electric motor evolve?

Battery tech needs to evolve much more before it has any chance of taking over. That day will come one day and it will be interesting to see what happens. Its not here yet though.

I think like any new technology it requires some creative marketing in order to entice early adopters, generating the interest and funds necessary to attract investor capital to develop something great.

For the MX market, this probably means something to do with scantily clad chicks and baller dudes. In other words, they'll need to somehow partner with Monster Energy.

Based on personal experience with about 100 track miles I'm not quite as competitive as with my 250F primarily due to the weight difference and getting used to no transmission. Telsa already has a new cell they'll be producing in the new gigafactory that offers about 20% better energy density over the std 18650 cells used in the Alta. That's probably a 15 lbs savings that Alta will see before next year's model. However, to be on equal footing weight wise Alta will need to lose another 15 pounds. That's probably a couple years out. Then watch out!

Applaud the effort. However....Weighs too much. Cost too much. Charge doesn't last long enough. Recharge times too long. Until it's economically competitive and the areas mentioned above are improved, it's not gonna be accepted. No matter how good it makes someone "feel". The only advantage I see at this point is no noise for near residential areas. Not knocking the effort. Just stating the facts. Additionally I crave that visceral sound, feel, smell. It's part of the whole moto experience.

Great idea. Not sure why they've gone for the cheap Chinese look tho, looks nasty.

It bums me out to see how many people in the community just dismiss this bike. :/ I get that it's not there yet, but think about how many opportunities this tech opens up for everyone.

It's a step in the right direction(just like Tesla). We need electric bikes to save the sport in the long run. Why? Well because the chance of tracks getting shutdown will be WAY slimmer when the majority is on electric bikes.

Yes i love the mechanical aspect of riding and racing but this is the future. With that said, the combustion engine bikes we ride now will never go away, there will always be a place for them(so you purists don't need to panic and talk down the Alta bikes without legitimate arguments).

The electric bikes will get cheaper and better with every year.

I like the concept. I would consider buying my son one today if it weren't so expensive. Basically double the price of a normal 250f, its hard to pony up for something that is still in its infancy IMO... I will be following the progression of this venture and hope to be a buyer one day, once it becomes more mainstream....

This is absolutely the future of our sport. The big 5/6 need to get on board.

The technology is still new. Give em' time to get the weight down and extend the range (for riders like me that are mostly trail). Sell each bike with a spare battery so you can swap it out and keep going. Do that I'd seriously think about getting one.

Kind of like with Tesla, when the price, range and ease of re-fill/re-charge approaches that of gasoline powered alternatives, I think this technology will really take off. Until then it's a cool niche market but won't go mainstream.

These bikes are the future and I am looking forward to the day that I can buy a new one for the cost of a gas bike. $15,000 is just too steep of a price range for most riders right now. I know they justify it with the savings on gas, oil, air filters, etc. but 95% of amateur riders aren't going to drop that much on a new bike. I'm sure that the big 4 are already at the drawing board and wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of leaked prototype in the next 2 years.

I've wanted an electric bike in the worst way since I seen the KTM but have since settled for converting a downhill mountain bike to electric and have been having a blast going riding at 7 in the morning in places you aren't allowed to ride here b/c everything is posted. The ability to ride anywhere you want without fear of making a ton of noise and drawing attention to yourself is pretty liberating to say the least.

Cost needs to be 3000$ cheaper than 250f. People would be all over them. Can't see this ever happening unless they start buying and building everything in China. But then we will just have a nother junk Chinese bike.

Little by little I'm falling in love with the bike enough to actually consider buying one. That ISDE video was great. I see this whole electric bike thing as being the most positive evolution in moto since the 1974 CR125 Elsinore. I own my own track, so noise isn't an issue for me, but nevertheless, the idea of rewarding a company that is safeguarding our future is something I find very compelling. Oh - and I'm not a kid - I'm in my fifties, with NO PLANS to stop riding or buying and tricking out bikes. If their next model loses some weight............. oh, how tempted I'd be.

I agree, the technology isn't quite there at this moment. Too many compromises to make them practical for the typical rider. I bought mine becouse I was looking for something to get me motivated again and didn't want to do the 2 stroke thing again. It's different and that's what I wanted.

One advantage that Alta isn't even pushing is being able to operate at high altitude and different weather conditions with no change in performance (extreme cold aside). That could be a big factor when competing against the target market 250F.

You guys who say you don't think it's the future of our sport. Take your blinders off. You are the same guys who said the same thing about the 4 strokes. I said the same thing. Who's going to step up and buy Alta? Honda,Yamaha? I would like to see an Alta & a 1999 YZF400 go at it.

Unless you live in a small town like I do and happen to own an small piece of land just outside of your garage, like I do. But it's surrounded by houses. That is my reason to buy one.
I'm just waiting on a few development years on the bike and I will have one. Then I will put lights around my land and ride whenever I want with little issue..

Needs to improve battery life, suspension and lower the cost. Other than that, I dig it

They are the future. In 10 years Alta, and all the big manufacturers will have a full range of e-bikes with 450 competitors that rip. I'm excited, but I was an electric revolution curmudgeon and it took me a long time to accept the reality of this world/sports future.

Alternative energy in general is not quite there but so so close.
1. I want solar on my house but its not financially viable ...yet. In 10 years it will be required.
2.The Alta is 30 lbs. too heavy. As mentioned above, the new batteries coming will last longer and weight 15 lbs. less. I see a point in the not too distant future where it will weight LESS not more than a conventional 250f
3.Battery recharge time is getting cut in half and they are lasting longer. Once the battery charge holds for 4 hrs. you'll see big market share gains.
4.The price is not as big a differential as some make it out to be. Price will fall as volume increases and for me its already about equal. (I spend 3k a year on race gas now)

It you dont see this as the future Id submit your not a future thinking person.
