I hope he can pull it together, 20th place is not going to get him far especially considering the weak depth in mx2. Not sure what happened to him he started so well.

Hes there to learn as long as theres progression the team wont mind if hes still getting 20th next season then there will be an issue.

I wouldn't characterize MX2 as having "weak depth". There are at least a few guys who ran Herlings pace this weekend (even though he may not have been 100%).

MX2 has a pretty deep feild, excellent to watch this year,so many different guys running upfront,Herlings is ahead of the pack, although he wasn't the fastest this week, there's a dozen guys he's having to struggle with, the gaap has closed so much

I think that podium early on may have created some unreasonable expectations. He had a fairly solid amateur career, but he wasn't a standout and I don't think he's the type of talent you would expect to instantly be top 10 in any professional series. If he's going to make it as a pro, it's most likely going to take some time to develop.

It will be interesting to see how McElrath and Bisceglia do in their first full year of Outdoors,I don't follow US Amatuer MX too much but from what Iv'e seen of all these guys racing together, wasn't Covington only a click off their pace?

The Qatar track was pretty much a Loretta Lynn`s or Freestone type track. Very American. Italy this weekend was more GP-like and maybe a little bit unfamiliar to him.
He will come back stronger. he`s young and will learn the GP-way quickly.

Its great to have a american in the GPs but i dont think hes a steady top 10 guy. Seems off the pace , yeah i know its a learning curve but CLS kawasaki is a premiere team not a learning curve team i was suprised they signed him, way more faster riders than covington. Can he improve? time will tell but as decotis said the mx2 boys are fast and the tracks brutal. Its going to be very tough for him.

Why would they switch to WP? Isn't CLS the PC team of Europe?

Ditto!!! Who is the teams major sponsor? Opportunities arise for different reasons. I hope this works out for him.

Seems the GP tracks are a bit tough on him, or perhaps he's not feeling at home on the CLS bike yet. (I'd expect them to be at least similar in terms of handling/power) 6 Secs off the leaders laptime is quite a bit to catch up to. He's a young, motivated and skilled kid, hope he can get his groove on during the next few GP's!

This is what makes GP's hard, each track is nothing like the last one..... Will take him a season to get used to it, Albertson, and Decotis both came and didn't adapt, they aren't bad riders., it's just tough

I think it's more about what goes on during the week and in between the races. Some Teams seem to be able to make American riders feel at home and some team people have a chip on their shoulders about USA riders in general.

Steve Dixon seems to have it figured out.

Covington was full of praise for the CLS family and team, and that was one of the reasons he stayed.. Fair play for wanting to do something different

It is good to see an American taking on the series, but he better get closer to the leaders than 9 seconds per lap or his stay there will be as short as Decotis' was.

That is awesome, I wasn't trying to say CLS wasn't a good fit sorry if it came off that way.

I think sometimes the riders themselves create the barriers as well, I think Dixon being based in England helps as well,

Just to clarify.....from RacerX

Lastly, how determined are you? You could be injured or depressed with UK or Dutch weather … there are other U.S. riders who have struggled to adapt to life so far from home. Are you the kind of kid who will embrace it as much as he can?

I’ve definitely got a tough journey ahead but I'm determined to be one of the top guys here. I want to be consistently in the top five as soon as possible and as far as the living situation goes I have a little bit of advantage in knowing Tommy [Searle] and Jamie [Dobb] for a quite a while so they’ll be my European family while I’m here. They have been very cool to me and after the Dutch GP I’ll go to England and settle there for a little bit.

Well if his is with Dobby and Tommy he will be based. 30 mins from here, and will probably use a few local tracks.... searle was out locally today, can't wait to see what Covington makes of what we have to ride here.. Luckily they have a good private place to ride.
