Language is a difficult subject here. People use "Godspeed" as RIP regularly. When Godspeed is what is said to astronauts before launch, meaning safe/successful/prosperous journey. It's more appropriate for the starting gate than how it's used here.

well, no shit. I wasn't implying it wasn't. It was a jab at urban dictionary, not racism.

Thanks MXKing, did you stay up late last night trying to decide if you should say something or not? I thought it meant - to poke fun at someone or something; to jap them; a boxer's short, straight on punch; short for a breed of dog called a Japrador Retriever.

I heard the Washington Redskins are going to change there name to the Washington Japs. They did a survey and found out 9 out of 10 Benihana customers were not offended by the name Jap.

So shortening the name of a country to describe it's citizens is derogatory? Yep, it sounds just as fucking stupid when I type it as it did when the op typed it.

If it weren't for stupid white people, who would we have to lecture the world on what words other races find offensive to themselves lol.

So calling a British citizen a 'Brit' is also racist? What makes one racist and not the other? You guys realize That it was white Americans that decided the word 'jap' was racist and not the Japanese, don't you? What cultural bias does 'jap' dredge up? It is literally a shorthand for 'japanese'. Jesus Christ, the never-ending list of words that are offensive for no good reason. We can still call Germans "krauts" can't we?

I have a customer who hates all things Jap. He remembers the hardships from growing up in a family who was affected by the actions of the Japanese during WW2. Refuses to get over it as he brought his Porsche in for repairs. Huh

I'd suggest that one's a contraction, and the other was intended as derogatory.

I'm also old enough to remember when it was used that way. Maybe you're not. Actually, judging by your avatar, I'm sure you're not. Smile

I realize it's your place, Gibby, so I understand your side of the argument. The ever-increasing stupidity of the language police in this country is what I can't stand. That just shortening a word can be racist is crazy to me.

If the Japanese find offense at "japs" then I'm all for not using it; my argument (as it is in all cases of pc language policing) is that the word wasn't offensive until white, politically correct groups said it was offensive. Avatar aside, I am old enough to have read 1984 and I see a lot of parallels in today's language-police brownshirts who find offense behind every word. I deleted my other posts because they said basically the same thing.

You have to be an idiot if you don't think that Japanese find that word "offensive".

I feel sorry for the Dorkovians, and Titanians, as well as the people from Bromenia.

Thank god for the noble white folk like you who tells the rest of the world what words they should take offense at. Thank you for your service. Is "huck" short for huckleberry? If it is then I'm offended. We live in such a childish, silly world.
