Pretty interesting Joey's take on Vegas.

"...if I’m in his shoes, there’s no doubt in my mind that I would have done the same thing. You know it wasn’t for a race win, not for a podium spot, it was for a title."

He did.

He tried really hard not to throw anyone under the bus for the "miscommunication" which I assume was something like "Osborne Out" written on the pit board or something like that.

He seems to have the right attitude after what happened, lets see if he can use that as the ultimate motivation to put himself on top of the podium this summer.

He knows the pass was for all the marbles. It sucks but he's got the right attitude it appears.

Yeah I agree. At a certain point they were going down opposite lanes right by each other. How do you know he's not coming with three laps left?

In Cycle News, Issue 19... http://magazine.cyclenews.com/h/i/344121201-cycle-news-2017-issue19-may…

In the Voices section, a "James Savatgy" wrote... "Joey didn't know [Zach] was coming, the last thing he saw on his board was just finish".

Read the rest of the letter, it provides more insight and to me explains what happened to Joey. I do like his attitude of not blaming someone else and admitting he would have done the same thing had the roles been reversed.

Thx for posting the link. Interesting comments. They should have finished the pit board....

Just Finish
Ahead of Zach

How he didn't see Zach coming is beyond me. I still think he did to be honest but he was so brain locked he could do nothing about it. Weather he admits it or not. When Joey is coming up a lane and Zach is going down the opposite lane and they pass by each other they are what, 10-15 feet apart? And he had no clue Zach was coming?

I find that very hard to believe. Regardless of what the pitboard said. Everyone in the world saw Zach coming. But the guys mechanic, team mananger, and the racer had no idea?

Wow is all I can say I guess.

Respect to Joey,

I really hate to see these young Men go through shit like He did but life happens and it seems like He's dusted himself off and got back into the ring.

They say FAIL stands for First Attempt In Learning. That was an epic "fail" for Joey, but it's one he's already learned from. Major props to Joey. Hope he does well in the outdoors.

I agree with you. I would think Joey heard the crowd - I did on TV - and should have been more alert to what was going on behind him.

I would like to hear Mitch's side of the story regarding miscommunication. Savagty clearly was riding very conservative, seemed strange at the time, still does. Poor dude coughed up points previous weekend with the backwards track riding. Other factors: Jordan Smith crashing out, Osborne crashing at the start.
IMO the universe aligned and the overall fastest (least consistent) rider won the championship.

The crowd could be cheering for any reason and if youre back in 7th, you're probably assuming its for the front runners. Especially if your mechanic is telling you "Osborne out" "just finish" "champ!".

Props to Joey for not throwing anyone under the bus. Monumental fuck up by his team.

Maybe I'm on an island here but I didn't read that interview and think he owned it. It looked more to me like a veiled attempt at owning it. I think he deflected some of the responsibility by throwing in the undertone that the message on the pit board should have been more clear.

Agree with you bud. He owned it but didn't own it. You can't tell me he didn't see Zach ten feet from him in the opposite lane. I believe everyone knew what was happening. But Joey was having such a brain fart that it matter what was on the pit board. And if you know as a rider Zach is clearly coming hot the last few laps who cares what the pit board says.

Had Joey raced to win instead of totally laying up then he would be champion.

Let that be a lesson learned. Race to win and let the chips fall where they may. That is what Dungey did in the last race. And he is champion.

Joey laid it up so bad that he got his clocked cleaned on the last lap and lost the championship.

I'm with you guys. It is cool that he's not being a bitch about getting blasted by Osborne. But, he mentions miscommunication multiple times in the interview, implying (imo) that it is his mechanics fault that he didn't let him know that Osborne was coming.

Kinda funny that the rider "owns it" or attempts to or whatever, yet his team still felt the need to file a protest. Oh the irony...

I think Joey still took the majority of the blame, especially with his early fall. He doesn't fall there and he wins easily. It will be interesting to see if he comes out this weekend and competes at the front. Gotta be tough to re-group that quickly, but I have a great deal of respect for the guy and I sure hope he can put himself in a position to win this thing. I know one thing-the two fiddy class is the one to watch this summer!

Wasnt it ironic that Zach was crying like a baby after the race....seemed to me Savatgy should be crying and Zach happy?

Was never a big Savatgy fan before but after that interview I've gained a new found respect for the guy. He did own what happened and he told the truth about the "miscommunication".
