Is it going to be available next season? If not, when will it? I can't remember how long it would be unavailable. IMO it should have been used already.

I thought I read somewhere that it became available this year, dunno why anyone would want it though. massive boots to fill

AMA to reserve Carmichael's number until 2011
3 April 2007

During a special ceremony at the Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross Series in Orlando on March 17, AMA Racing announced it will hold Ricky Carmichael's famed #4 in reserve for three years.

Carmichael, the AMA's most successful Supercross and Motocross rider, announced his retirement prior to the 2007 racing season and Orlando marked his final AMA Supercross race.

According to AMA Racing Vice President, Communications, Kerry Graeber, the three-year retirement of Carmichael's racing number is in honour of his extraordinary racing career.

"Ricky Carmichael has raised the bar of professional motorcycle racing to all new levels and this gesture is a small token of our appreciation," said Graeber. "In addition to all of his on-track success 'RC' has been a tremendous ambassador for motorcycle racing overall and we wish him nothing but the best as he embarks on the next phase of his racing career."

Carmichael has announced that he will turn his attention to auto racing with hopes to eventually race in NASCAR's Nextel Cup.

AMA Racing Director of Supercross/Motocross, Steve Whitelock presented the honour to Carmichael in Orlando, and explained why the number wouldn't be permanently retired: "With so few single digit numbers available it's impractical for us to permanently retire a competitor's racing number," said Whitelock. "However, given Ricky's accomplishments in the sport, we're comfortable reserving his number through 2011."

Carmichael's statistics are likely never be matched. In addition to 144 career wins in AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross, Carmichael is a 15-time AMA Champion and was named AMA Rookie of the Year in 1996.

Carmichael has been named the AMA Racing SPEED Athlete of the Year an unprecedented five times, represented the United States in the Motocross of Nations six times and is the only rider to have ever carded a perfect season in the AMA Motocross Championship. Also, Carmichael has won championships in every class he's raced and on every brand of motorcycle he has represented.

Carmichael has stated that he will race in five or six events in the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship before focusing exclusively on auto racing. The AMA Motocross season begins on May 19-20 at the Hangtown Classic in Sacramento, California.

I don't expect to see 25 points. Why would he do that? He's fully retired.

so was Henry and Dowd but they would show up in a pick up truck and give even RC fits for a few laps...let me have my wishful thinking-

Heck Mike Brown is out there getting his and he's been gone for awhile-

It pisses me off to see retired guys come back to race just to get a few points so they can try to hang on to the past. Let it go! If they were racing just for the fun and love of it that would be different, but to try and keep their irrelevant number is pointless.

6/3/2011 7:11 AM

Speaking of Henry, shouldn't #19 be free soon?

6/3/2011 7:13 AM

Yea, but mike still races full time...maybe not mx but offroad, endurocross, gncc...not like he is retired.

It just seems like a different situation to me. Mike Brown still races WORCS and is still in race shape. Dowd still races and stays in race shape. Henry at the time was racing supermoto and still riding enough to stay in good physical condition. RC has completely hung it up for Nascar and is in Nascar shape. Just my opinion but I don't think he's interested.

6/3/2011 7:26 AM

Yeah, don't expect RC racing

he still rides once a week- not saying he is in 30 plus 2 shape but if you follow him on twitter he still rides- Remember couple years ago when he waxed all the Retired guys, Stanton etc etc- he was bummed that they didn't let him go out with A guys in practice- He could easily come out and score points and have a blast doing it-

If they're out there for fun/love of it why not just use another number? Let the current racers use every number available?

Man I amn really bummed I used to use RC at age three on a 3wheeler with the number 4 as my avatar and now I can't find the photo- Does anyone have it? I asked grandpa google but nothing!

I guess I am biased- I have had 441 since I started racing at 15 I am 36 now and suspect it'll be on my tombstone-

we are talking about RC- The man wore orange gear for a whole season and still uses and markets a number that he started running when he's 3- do you really not get it?

6/3/2011 7:52 AM

No way that former pile of muscle rider now semi fat driver of a trucks is going to go threw this ordeal just to keep that rather pointless right to "own a number professionally". We all know RC by his name, like MC. If they want to promote something the number of their bike is really pointless and MC uses "his" no 2 in all promos anyway despite RV is now the "rightful owner".

I wish RC was dumb singed up with that beer belly in an attempt to keep his number, but RC isn't stupid. RC moved on, some of us fans didn't.

are you saying rc in his current state couldnt get 25 points?

I can't agree more.
Mike Brown, just let it go dude. You did great and grab this super low number for the one time you earned a championship. That was like 17 years ago dude. Freakin' let it go to some current up and coming stars... If you want to ride for fun grab your LL number or something like that.

6/3/2011 8:38 AM

At what point will a rule change stop the retired guys from coming back for a race or two to try and keep their number? If a said rule was in place now, would we see any of these guys return for any races for the so called love of the sport? Don't get me wrong, I love seeing them on the track but most are there for all the wrong reasons.

Balancing act between progression and tradition.
Saturday nationals are good.
Permanent numbers and timed qualifying not so good.

6/3/2011 8:51 AM

So who's gonna take it?

If Canard didn't have such a compelling reason for using #41 it would be cool to see him with #4.

6/3/2011 8:53 AM

Isn`t #4 pretty much sacred and wouldn`t anybody who would run it be a little insane?

The pessimist says it can`t get any worse, the optimist says it can.

Of course he could, I think the general question is whether he'd need more than 1 moto to do so.
