$550.00 a week? I guess bring your own cardboard box to sleep in and don't worry about putting in 12hr days...every day. Is this the going rate for a position like this? How could you survive off of that?

550 is pretty good. Maybe not for California, but in Georgia that's a high school grads dream.
Assuming a 40 hour week, it's $13.75 an hour. I made $8.50 an hour working at Servicemaster; driving large vehicles, doing demolition, and fire/mold mitigation.

haha as if it will be a 40 hour week.

That said it does sound like a ok position for someone loves the sport and is keen to get into the industry.

This "ad" pops up every year and the same comments are made. I don't know how, but Team Tedder seem to fill the "position" every year. Cool

I guess the upside is you will have so little free time that it would probably be hard to find any (time) to spend the money. They should add a dot point.

Everyone needs to start somewhere though. When I first moved to California and was trying to get in the snowboard industry, I'd shoot and edit videos for $100 a week. It was part time, but it was my foot in the door. So if you think about being 21-22 years old and making $2,200 a month to do what you love, it's not bad at all.

$550 working unlimited hours is kinda a crappy salary, that being said if I was 21 and didn't have anything lined up it would be fun for a year. They aren't looking for much, someone that can drive and wash a bike...

Not many of you know that it's not really that bad. I have worked for a couple guys doing this exact job, traveling, away from my family and friends, for less than this. It's for the ones that really love the sport. I love the sport and I did this for a few years before I came home and now work in a dealership. Also keep in mind, when you're with the team, your food usually taken care of and if not, don't be a bitch, eat a pb&j. I loved every minute of my job. Even working in the hot Cali sun in the middle of the summer

At 21, and you want to get on the scene, this seems like a good route to take.

I don't think they are expecting someone with a wife, two kids, and a mortgage to apply. More so some kid just out of MMI who is a fan of the sport and thinks it would be a cool way to build his resume.

Some of you guys sound like the millennial crowd who wants to start at the top of everything.

When I was 21 I was in college and worked at a bicycle shop. I would have been all over something like this for a season just for the sake of getting paid to work around badass bikes and supercross tracks.

If you are young, single, and love mx, sounds like a freakn cool job... Old, married, and have adult bills, need not apply....

The key here would be to use this as a stepping stone to something better. Take the job, work hard at it, make friends and contacts while you are at it, use your networking skills to move upward in the career field. It's called "The American Way". Use people for your own benefit, but be smart and don't burn any bridges. Just make damn sure that in the end you win.

What everyone needs to understand is they can only work 40hrs as that $550 per week equals $28,600 per year...way under the minimum of $47,500 minimum salary allowed by law (beginning 12/1/16). Anyone who makes less than $47,500 per year in salary and works more than 40 hrs per week is due overtime pay at time and a half...Tedder may want to look into the new regulations before he states what he will pay and then follows it up with must be flexible with hours....https://www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/final2016/overtime-factsheet.htm

So drive to a track and sit there all day, wash a few bikes and change some oil? Not bad really, may be longer days but how much of it is really working? Sounds like a lot of down time while on the clock bro'ing down.

Flexibility goes both ways to. Position is driving and doing filters, probably a lot of downtime at th track. Most riders aren't going to put in 8 hour days at the track, o average. Probably testing new parts might be a long day, on occasion.
And if was low on financial commitments I'd look at that as a freaking awesome way to be around a professional race team. The learning experience counts for a lot as well.

What happens if they require this new "employee" to 1099 as an independent contractor? Could it be a way they are trying to get around the law?

I would assume this employee would be an independent contractor. For this kind of work it's very common. But there is a perk for the employee. He can write off all the tools he buys, milage, health insurance, garage space and anything else that is work related.

You are not an independent contractor if you perform services that can be controlled by an employer (what will be done and how it will be done). This applies even if you are given freedom of action. What matters is that the employer has the legal right to control the details of how the services are performed.
If an employer-employee relationship exists (regardless of what the relationship is called), you are not an independent contractor and your earnings are generally not subject to Self-Employment Tax

for a young single guy trying to get a foot into the industry this is a solid way to do it. Work this then network with other teams. In cali it isnt really much.....but you're working on a team and thats pretty awesome. My bro helped the team at hangtown and colorado a few years back as intern, and the experience was worth it. If i was still single and was better at bike maint id jump into this.

It reminds me of the old saying....you get what you pay for! $550 a week is barely fast food money then sprinkle the cost of living in California.....

The $550 a week does not even cover the responsibility of the liability of driving the vehicle to and from the track.

Hahaha of course you should .... tell that to every employer that pays salary because theyre ALL violating this one. Once you go salary youll NEVER see the word "overtime" mentioned on your pay check. When i was in Construction Project Management we worked A LOT of hours ... holy shit was it a lot. I once worked 25 hours straight through. Started at 6:30am Friday morning and finally went home Saturday morning at7:30am, no breaks and hardly 20mins for lunch. We were prepping for a 660 yard lean concrete base pour on the 110 and had the connector from the VTB to the 110n shut down at night to do the pour and ended up getting done just in the nick of time and i was fucking BEAT after that "day" .... didnt paid one cent more than my 8 hours and even got yelled at by the superintendent for "leaving early" sat morning, are you kidding me? He was an asshole though and he reason i left the company.... which in hindsight i do regret, i shouldve just laid him out that day and all wouldve been fine. Haha
