It has recently been made easier to plate your bikes in Washington. While some may not approve, I'm considering plating my 06' CR250. Anyone done this? I'm not concerned with the actual plating process, more what or who makes street conversion stuff. I've looked at Baja Designs and E-Line but didn't see much for 2-strokes.

Save the it will suck on freeways and such. It's just to cruise to the office which is 5 min away so I don't care about going long distances or running at 60+ mph.

I thought I would try here with a lot of guys revamping their bikes. Just looking to have some fun cruising a 2-stroke on the roads.

And even for that 5 minute cruise, it's terrible.

I had an '04 ktm 250sx I converted to supermoto, and rode it on the street.

It fucking sucked, the bikes are lights witches, and won't cruise easily at all. Infact, the carbs are not built with cruising in mind. It's either go, or slow down. This made it a nightmare in any sort of light traffic, and the clutch HATED life. Mind you, my bike also made 46whp, and was a BeAST of a supermoto, I quickly made it track only again.

I could see that. I seriously only need to go like 3 miles each way. I follow my boy around on his 50 at the track so I know the feeling. Hah

You're probably going to have to use some generic stuff and make it work yourself, since street legal 2-strokes over 50cc are illegal in places like CA.

It just plain sucked, I loved the bike, and roadracing was amazing. But trying to pace with traffic, and follow any sort of speed limit is idiotic.

Suzuki made a street legal 2 stroke in the 90's...I think the RMX? That would be your best bet, as the race-bred 250's aren't made for cruising.

I made a street legal KX250, I mounted a battery from a Barbie jeep under the seat, It pushed the air filter down slightly, Wired the everything to that so when I was on the road I flipped a switch and everything worked, Horn, brake lights, headlights, etc. Charged battery once in 2 years, basically needed it street legal to ride certain trails/areas in Michigan, Worked great and had less then 200 into it

Do it, it will be a blast. Midnight MX is the greatest. Bouncing off of curbs and wheeling down the straights. Woo-hoo

before supermoto was "popular" in the US they brought some of the euros over to do an exibition race circa late 1990s...my buddy who is an extremely fast road racer and mxer slapped some dual sport tires from the junkyard on his 98 CR 250 and smoked the euros on factory 'bergs and huskys...so in the right hands a 250 2smoke can be capable on the street..

Lots of people bitched and moaned about the first gen Honda aluminum frames. They were so good on the SM and flat track scenes that I loved mine wish I never sold it. I did ok on the MX track with mine two. Might have to look for one to do this same thing.

How has it changed? How do you do it? My dad is in WA and I'd love to get our bikes plated up there.

My pal has a street legal '06 YZ250 he got at the dealership he worked for in Colorado and now that he's moved to CA is still riding it. Think he said it was the only yr Yamaha made street legal 250 YZFs.

working on a simular project right now. You should be able to pick up a Dakar kit for any bike and get it to work. The difference seems to be the headlight mounting bracket as everything else seems to be contained in the kit.

For me the stator with a charging circuit has been the bigest problem. Bought one off feebay and it had no spark. It came with electrosport instructions so I called them and they were great ..... except the stator was a counterfeit and not from them. They even shipped the bad stator back to me at no charge. I am waiting for electrosport to get mor in and I will be ordering one from them.

Hey Lumpy,

What tires are those? Anything else you've run into?

Thanks!

Also the sticking point up here for some guys is the brake lines. They are requiring DOT approved lines. Ie. DOT stamped. There is someone that will make them up here custom but id rather just buy a set if anyone knows a place that sells them.

DOT approved brake lines... really? Thats going to be a tough one for the front. Not even a street bike line will be long enough. I would hit a auto parts store and find the longest one you can find....look at how its labeled Smile

The tires are road race rain tires. I buy them used with the more heat cycles the better to harden them up. That rear and a matching front I found from a craigslist post looking for used RR Rain tires ... $50 each and they guy lives just up the street from me.

That's not a bad idea. It just has to be stamped.

My 06 DRZ 400S has the softest front brake ever. when I jump on my 02 CR250 and hit the front brake the 1st few times I almost go over the bars every time.
I would think you'd want to gear it up quite a bit as well.
Good luck on your project buddy!

only one I could find for a cr250

Off topic, but when I was in Vanuatu I met a guy that got around the city on a KX500, it was so scary watching him pin it around on the asphalt in thongs (flip flops), no packing in the muffler so if he was riding you knew about it. Good luck with your build, post up some photos when your done.

a company called DRC does wiring kits, they work off AA batterys, they also do pressure switches for brake lights, switch blocks and everything,

this is from a NZ site, i am sure you could find it closer tho,

http://www.mrmotorcycles.co.nz/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=27&pro…;

they also do tail light kits

we can get premade DOT brake lines over here, so i presume you can there to, I have known a couple of people get 500's road legal, 18" rims make tyres a lot easier to get if you do not want to go full motard,

Stay away from the Electrosport Dakar dual sport kit .And their customer service is even worse. They should hire the customer service out to India. It could only be an improvement.

I found Trick Dual Sport to be the nicest.
The easiest it to fit is a battery run kit. If you dont plan on night riding its all you will need

When you ride on the road you will be surprised how fast you run out of gears.

A buddy of mine in the Florida Keys has one of these that is plated. He imported it to GA, then transfered it down to FL.

He says it is fun, but it is tuned differently than a standard CR.

Electro Sport customer service has been nothing but 100% exceptional for me.

Electrosport discontinued the Dakar dual sport kits but you can buy them cheap on ebay. I paid $250 for mine while something simular will cost $500+

Hey Lumpy do yourself a favor and get a Ricks or moose (ricks makes it for them) stator. You may have had good luck with electrosport but their stators are junk. I'm not bashing the company but have had to handle lots of problems with their stuff
