Doesn't a former champion have to score points in the previous year to hold on to a single digit number? With Stewart not scoring any points in '15, you think he will go back to the 259?

He has a career number, it's different than say cianciarulo misses a full year without points. Stewart will still have 7

There's a clause that includes injury and other unforeseeable circumstances, which allows a rider to miss a season and keep their career number.

Name change freshens things up a bit.

Hallmen went to Thor...Malcolm Smith went to MSR...No Fear went broke.

He could change the name to 768 industries to corrisponde to the section, paragraph and sentence of the FIM rulebook that be broke.

If he didn't have to maintain the branding of the gear company, I think returning back to the 259 would be pretty cool, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way.

Lets face it, his career went downhill when he started running the 7, maybe the switch to 259 will be a mental help to him.

Btw, every time i watch mxgp i wonder who the guy is running stewarts number (259)

going back to 259 would be a cool move at some point actually.

3 digit career numbers are against the rules now. Mike Alessi is grandfathered in. Hypothetically, if Stew missed another season he could run #259 for one season, but after earning some points he'd have to run the number he earned or pick a 2 digit career number.

Which brainiac came up with that idea?

As he has a whole brand built around 7. I doubt he would part from easy.

I guess being banned for taking a banned substance without a TUE falls under the " unforeseeable circumstances" clause. Sad

One year at Daytona he came out in practice on the JGR Yamaha with 259. Looked really cool. It was the year he jumped the gator pit. I will never forget that race. Cool to see it in person. He is magic at Daytona!

This has been addressed several times.

Here is the most clear answer

http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Moto-Related,20/Return-of-the-259,1286049

My post from that thread copied from the AMA rule book:

http://www.amasupercross.com/rules/pdf/2015/AMA_Supercross_Rulebook14_W…

Page 18....

3.3 National Numbers

a. All riders must use the competition number that has been
assigned for the current season. This includes the
Championship number 1, career number or an earned national
number.

b. Number 1

1. Current Champion must run the #1.

c. Numbers 2 - 9

1. Past Champions from the previous competition year may choose a permanent single digit career number if available.

d. Career Numbers

1.Riders who finish in the top 10 in Championship points from the combined 450SX, 250SX, 250MX and 450MX classes from the previous competition year will have priority for the
selection of a National two digit available number for the
their career number.

2. Riders who fail to earn at least 25 championship point during
the season preceding the new season will lose their career
number and be issued a new number based on current
points. Special consideration is given to a rider if he/she is
confirmed with a season long injury or other special circumstance
which prevents him from competing that season.

e. Numbers 10 - 999

1. Riders who finish outside the top 10 but inside the top 100 will be
assigned consecutive two digit numbers until the
supply of two digit numbers are exhausted.

2. The total combined points from the 450SX, 250SX, 450MX and 250MX classes will be used to determine the order.
National numbers are then issued according to highest to lowest total points. In case of riders having the same amount of total points the tie is broken by the best Moto finish for those riders. In the event you have a rider that
rode just SX and one that rode SX and Motocross, the tie would go to the rider that rode both series.

f. 100 through 110

1. Held for top riders from overseas that would like to participate in that year’s SX or MX.

he never should have left the 259 imo, was for a good cause and every bit as iconic as travis's 199.

Even if his number was open for whatever reason, nobody would take it. Specially if he had plans to come back and race. And when he is done it will sit for a few seasons before anyone else pics it up. And in many cases if a rider is gonna begin to run the number when it is available they call the former rider and ask permission.
