Is a larger or smaller sprocket size better for hillclimbs?

We talking about the front sprocket or the back sprocket? Mainly just make sure the bolts are torqued.

I asked if I should get a bigger or smaller rear and front sprocket for hillclimbs not if I should torque them

Medium size will put you right in between the large and small size sprocket which is ideal for most situations

It doesn't matter what size you go with if they aren't torqued properly.

One tooth up. And check your sprocket bolts before every ride unless you have a Tusk wheels / Vertex sprocket combo.

The increase or decrease on the front and rear sprockets are unproportionately interdependent so you should do some math on that before making a hasty decision.

If your final interdependent ratio is less than 4.10 to 1 then use RED loctite and only use blue loctite if you have the tool shown here and your ratio is less than or equal to 3.678

Always use this tool to torque them just to be safe.

clearly you don't give a shit about track/hill safety.

change your tone and check your torque bro

The size of the sprockets doesn't really matter.

are you running nitro?

Clearly there is some confusion here. Forget the sprockets - though their correct torque is crucial - instead, concentrate on shock sag. Too much and your front is light. Too little and the rear will not dig in and grip. You must find the correct sag ratio.

If I may inquire, what brand and size motorcycle will you be assaulting the hills with? With better information, a more complete plan can be developed here via the Vital Brain Trust (VBT).

Always go up bro. Bigger sprocket helps with weight distribution and better grip due to the increased weight.

I see you adjusted your torque wrench setting on that one! I was wondering there for a minute...

Sprocket size makes no difference it's about links in the chain, more links gains top end, less links for bottom end response.

Yes, I did. When I took a second look in this thread it seemed that my response didn't fit with the theme. This topic was probably posted as a means of furthering the sprocket bolt torquing joke, rather than by somebody who is actually in need of advice about their bike's drive ratio. Your response should suffice if the OP is actually seeking helpful advice.

Exactly. A motocross forum is probably not the best place to ask about hill climbing sprocket ratios.

Without more information we can't be certain that the valuable advice is compleatly accurate.

For example, perhaps the OP is riding a TM. They have so many sprocket bolts that they can be run finger tight.
(Still technically a "torque setting")
