Excellent.
You could actually talk to people while standing near the track.

I'll second that motion.

How much do you think the bazooka style mufflers have to do with it or do you think it is more ignition and cam timing?

I am sure its a combination engine setup as well as exhaust design.
I think this event proved that you don't need a bazooka style exhaust to lower the noise to a realistic level.

I never thought about the sound while I was there. You are correct though, it was not that bad.

Yeah, neither did I...but now that I think about it, it was much better.

And that tunedlength guy? He knows what he's talking about. Smile

Langston was complaining about how slow his bike was with the different gas and sound levels they had to meet

Townley did, too...unless you're confusing the two. And "slow" being a relative thing.

Slow is redundant if everyone plays by the same rules...

On the other hand, F1, Nascar, Drag, and every other motorsport is ok to be loud... Why can't the manufacturers just sell quieter stuff...

Why is our sport hindered by such difficulty in seeing the common sense answer...

This time last year after GH I had tinnitus.
This year sweet, but then again I didn't go either.
But seriously I wish I had gone just not to experience the pain.
None of this is coming out right is it?

power loss had more to do with Fuel than sound level.

The bikes just need to get quieter. There's no excuse for it.

That's odd because I had this conversation during the race and everyone agreed it didn't sound any less loud to us. But then again loud bikes never bothered me before.

This is one area where the US, and all parties involved with professional level racing have failed.

"Some" of the showroom 450's will not come close to passing the sound requirement in 2010 or 2011. The awareness level was raised in our local district about 5 years ago when we started testing bikes at every race during the season. It was ugly at first, but now if there is a loud bike in the mix, it really stands out.

For the higher level people in the sport, and manufacturers to look at this issue with less than a progressive view is sad. Not to pick on anyone specifically, but why don't we see strict sound level rule enforcement at the big amatuer national events? Answer, very few would pass.

The new Yamaha and Suzuki's have reduced sound signifcantly over the past few seasons. We also tested a new Yoshi last weekend that came across at 94db on a Honda. Although these numbers are encouraging, the bikes on the showroom floor need a lot of attention. Until the right sector of upper echelon get more involved, it will be a loosing battle.

True
A vet rider at the GP couldnt pass sound with his stock system.
Had to borrow an FMF pipe.
Who would have thought we would see the day when an aftermarket pipe is more quiet than stock.

We noticed the quieter bikes, it was a pleasant surprise.

AMA or whoever runs the show needs to follow suit.

Even Belgian national races have to comply to noise regulations.

They pick a couple of riders from each race to test sound after the race.

Noise is the number one complaint against our sport. It has to be addressed, like it or not. I'm not saying a 450 National should sound like a gate full of stock KLX110's but the noise level has to go down or more and more tracks will shut down.

If we all rode 2 strokes tracks wouldn't close.

I had two guys running Rocket production sysytems and they both passed....... My new production systems use a little longer muffler with one size smaller core..... I too agree that the sound level was nice at the GP.

That is right on the money.

We have had to advise a few riders to quiet down the exhaust before they come back to race with us because we want to avoid issues with sound complaints.

For those of you who like quiet please don't forget about Sound Off MC

All opinions are welcome even if you aren't down with the less sound=more ground movement.

Hope to see you posting soon!

It was MUCH quieter. It was nice to be able to talk to somebody during the race without needing to yell.
