In the wee hours of this morning, I was rattled out of a deep sleep by my cel phone ringing. I usually put it on Airplane Mode, and use it as an alarm clock, but forgot last night. It takes a few minutes to compose myself when I've been that far gone, and what I was hearing was making a lot of sense. More on the unbelievable side of things, actually. Once I confirmed my identity to the member of the constabulary who was calling, I was filled in on the details of a fellow Vital members misfortune. Shaking my head in disbelief, I got dressed and headed down to the hospital where he was being treated.
After checking in with the Emerg desk to be sure I was headed to the right area, I arrived at the ward, and can only describe what as I saw as something out of a Stephen King novel. The staff and constable asked me to confirm the patients identity, and since he was was kicking up a pretty good fuss, and surrounded by medical staff, it was difficult at first. I could hear him yelling, and I really couldn't believe what I was hearing, the whole thing was surreal. Apparently, there was a real struggle to get him undressed and into a hospital gown, but finally a doctor sedated him, and also asked me to identify the patient.
As the struggle subsided, the crowd parted, and I could make out who it was, I was not prepared for what I saw. There, half unconscious, dressed in Cole Seeley pajamas, lay Jarid332. Now somewhat calmer, all he could do was mutter "No Cole, the '17 SX season is over. No, no. This isn't possible, you were supposed to be the champ." Heart rending, to say the least, but all I could do was look at he doctor, and tell him it was indeed who they thought. My job over, all I could do was look at him in shock, and hope for the best. Then the police officer wanted to fill me in the details of his descent into delirium.
Apparently at around 2am, the neighbours saw him screaming, running down the street, barefoot. Out of his mind, running amok amongst people's flower beds. Tragic. After exhausting all the greenery, he disappeared from sight, just before the police showed up. For his own safety, the police were relentless in their search to find him, and bring him to safety. It took an hour or so, but his final resting spot was in a dumpster behind McDonalds, wallowing in French fries, tossed away like trash. Curled up in the fetal position, screaming "Cole, NO!" Tough to even listen to the story, let alone live it. A total feeling of helplessness overwhelmed me. It is only now, 18 plus hours later, I am able to relate this story to you.
I was able to get some pics of the constabulary and top notch medical staff that are now tending to Jarid's well being. They were somewhat reluctant to have pics taken, as it seemed like unnecessary bravado, they were just doing their jobs, but I assured them it would be good for the Vitards. That seemed to ease their minds, and grabbed a couple of pics.
In closing, please keep Jarid in your thoughts, pray for a speedy and full recovery, and, well,............post fuckin' bears.
Be strong Jarid, we are all pulling for you.
The incredibly talented medical team.
Working hard to get Jarid back on track.
The police, in their relentless quest to bring Jarid to safety. An unprecedented level of dedication, humanitarianism, and professionalism.
Finally, in honour of our fallen brother, Bears. Get well soon Jarid!
