My son just turned 3 back in July and I want to get him into dirt bikes, but I don't know if he's still young and if not what brand and size should I be looking into getting for him?

pw50 for sure. My opinion is he should be able to ride a bicycle without training wheels before riding moto.

I started just after 3 on a PW and was ok on a BMX with no trainers... But then I did ride straight into the back of our parked Ute...

So... you know.

safety gear for your little one. Also like said above, stay very close by and get any object that won't move when ran into out of the way. Kids will get so excited they will drive into shit for sure.

My son's PW50 had a long rope tied to the bar that runs underneath the rear fender that I could hold onto in case he got too out of control. It's not a perfect method by any means, but it kept him from crashing through the fence. I had the throttle screw turned in enough to keep it slow but still fast enough to where he could keep his balance.

i started at 2 1/2, restrict the pipe with a washer, the throttle restrictor will get going faster and faster and faster if he holds it wide open, and could end in a mini disaster

heck no throw him on it! Training wheels and straight lines only. Let him take off from mom and ride straight to dad for 5 feet, 10 feet, 20, 30 etc. He will get it. I was 4.

First question is, does HE want to get into it? If he's not asking for it, I'd wait and start saving for the hot 50's that will come in a few years.

My 3 year old is begging me to buy him a bike every day since the beginning of the season. First I told him he'd have to ride his pedal bike without training wheels. Second time out they were off... He'll start next year as Santa is bringing him the bike (I can't afford to buy one myself of course Wink )

I think there is a lanyard kill switch (similar to what is seen on personal watercraft) on the market that is like the long rope hvaughn is describing above. You walk behind the bike, at a distance and can pull it to kill the bike.

Yes, let the little guy learn to ride a bicycle first. I never did the training wheels thing with my son (on a dirt bike). As soon as he had some time on a bicycle, I pulled the trigger on a JR50. He hopped right on and never looked back.

Best place for your son to learn hide to ride is at base ball field. Only thing you have to worry about is him running into a fence. That's were my boy learn how to ride when he was 3. I don't know which route your going on a new or use dirt bike but if you do decide to buy a use PW 50
make sure the bike has everything stock on it. If you plan on getting your son into racing and your trying to qualify for Loretta Lynn national the bike has to be completely stock. When I bought my son PW I have to premix the gas and it has a kill switch on it. Which makes the bike ineligible.

Sounds about the right time for me. My dad gave me my first bike at 2. I had to wait a little bit. It was the Indian in my profile pic.

Save yourself a bunch of money, gray hairs, and hospital bills and put some golf clubs in his hands instead of a throttle! LaughingLaughingLaughing

Alright, I'll play:

And:

I have pics of CRF50 and recent big bike stuff but not readily available like these.

It is so true, it goes by so fast you wont even know what hit you. Try to take a step back sometimes and relish the moment as much as you can.

Put this custom Oset together for my son when he was 2.5, it was too soon for him. About a year later he was ready. The videos are at about 4.5yo, and at that time the voltage and current were limited to 60% and 40%. Proud dad moment about 30 seconds into the first video!

Both of my kids started riding a PW50 at 2-1/2. My son started racing MX at 3-1/2 and my daughter kinda just wanted to ride around the peewee track. If I could go back and change things, I would've boughten them one of the OSET electric trials bikes and let them rip those around for a couple years, before getting the pw50's.

Hey, thanks for asking. It was a lot of fun to think out and build. I think it may be the ultimate starter bike.

We bought a used 12.5 oset that already had a Oset 16 swing arm. Then I laced up a set of Pro-wheels and mounted some pirelli's.

We cut the battery tray off the frame and welded in new rails to hold the Lipo batteries (running about 42 volts tight now)

It has hydraulic disc brakes on the rear from a larger oset, and I am trying to mount the front brakes one day.

The fork is custom machined from an old aluminum manitou mountain bike fork. Seems to work pretty well and it is very light weight. The shock is a older rockshox with adjustable compression.

We use a really cool little controller from Kelly controller, it can be plugged into a laptop and there are all sorts of adjustments to change the power output and delivery. The Lipo batteries and Kelly controller required completely rewiring the bike, but it isn't very difficult.

A few months ago I had to cut down the plastic and shave the foam on a old KTM seat I had laying around, then we took a seat cover and installed it over the foam, the base, and the original Oset seat. That worked out really well and raised the seat height up about 3 inches for him.

At his age having an electric bike is awesome because he can ride nearly anywhere anytime. He is about to outgrow this bike though, so it may be back to the drawing board.

For guys in the same position as the OP I would definitely suggest at least considering one of the little Osets. You may want to do like us and mod it to be more moto and less trials though.

Must say 151, that is awesome. Well done. I have another little one coming soon and I hope she doesn't want anything to do with racing but casual riding around the farm and track would be awesome. Thanks for sharing
