What is the fuel capacity of the factory teams gas tanks? I'm just wondering how much difference it is from stock.

Depends on the track and if its SX or MX , they have several sizes to choose from and use them depending on the track or length of the race.

Gee I don't know let's assume it's MX and Glen helen(crazy assumption right). What's your answer now? Lol

I don't pretend to be an expert on these matters and was unwary enough to be tempted by this smartly baited hook. I do know the early answer is never the best, but alas time is of the essence. When a better response comes along, kindly disregard this one. Fuel cap: 35 min.

Depends on which factory bike. The problem is there is no set answer. Yamaha used CRM carbon fiber fuel tanks made in larger sizes depending on the tracks, Sand tracks like southwick needed it more than a track like Hangtown. This is such a vague question that is different for ever team every year . Honda changed from carbon fiber to aluminum for the larger tanks and may have switched back to carbon fiber. Kawasaki welded on a reservoirs that held 300 to 500 cc of fuel. Now with the EFI they can figure it out much better than when they used a Carb and they dont loose as much fuel out the overflow like the carbs did either. When they ran Martins bike on our Dyno before Lakewood last year it had the stock size because with the altitude fuel consumption was not an issue. Lets try a question that has a set in stone answer like what is the best suspension setting for factory forks or what is the best oil to run ? Whistling

I really didn't mean to be so vague with the question. My ktm 450 has a 1.98 gallon tank. I guess I was just looking for a comparison like do they run 4 gallon tank for the nations or is it just a little more like 2.5. I really didn't think they custom made tanks for every different national.

They dont make a different tank for each race but a couple years ago Team Suzuki has three different size tanks and used the tank that fit the bill for each race. For SX it was the smallest tank because of the shorter races and some had the fuel cell foam in them to keep the fuel from splashing back and forth. Not sure which national they use the largest tank for now but they use to top them off after the sighting lap and you don't see than as much now with EFI because they do not lose as much fuel out of the overflow.

Heard mention of the use of some device incorporated into the fuel cap, or oversized cap, containing an additional few ounces, at Unadilla a couple years back. Any truth?

Every team varies but this is close. Indoors they all run around a gallon, oitdoors depending on the track and rider they have 1.75 and 2 gallon tanks. Some riders get better fuel mileage then others and harder pack tracks use less fuel then deeper tracks.

When Nicoletti ran out of fuel at Freestone on the Eleven10 bike I helped his mechanic blow his stock tank up until it almost wouldn't go back on the bike. Had to remove the rubbers and force it between the frame rails. Probably held an extra quart.....or three.Laughing

So cool seeing that bike holeshot all that factory effort it was lined up against. Good times.

They run a large enough tank to make one wonder why a modern 450cc four stroke with fuel injection would need to carry as much fuel as the 500cc class two strokes bikes did back in the day when they raced 40 min plus 2 motos.

Obviously fuel evaporation (boiling) problems with hot fuel are occurring which is 100% HC emissions. So are these four strokes really the environmentally conscious machines we were told they were??

I talked to Metcalfes mechanic at hangtown. He was running a custom carbon fiber fuel tank that carried more fuel. didnt ask how much more... i was oogling the trick tank and subdued gas cap

Needless to say, all the teams have learned from the Southwick incident when Metty and Short ran out of gas. 2011 or 2012?, can't remember.

Unless you have a fuel leak, a 4 gallon tank is not going to get used up in a 35 minute moto; even Magoo wouldn't have burned through that much. You'll be safe with a 2.5 gal, that's roughly 25% more fuel capacity.
