1 year recovery!

I've done both of mine multiple times. Without surgery if you don't put it out again it will take 3 years to be tight again.

Sacrifice some of your range of motion, for stability. In other words, let it heal up in a shortened fashion, for months, then stretch gain back your daily functional range of motion.

OR, stretch the shit out of it now, and it will be nice and loose, and more susceptible to future dislocations.

That sucks. Way worse than mine, but I had a hard "end-o" in a rhythm section back in April.
It has sucked big time. I'm pretty old, and I jacked my right shoulder bad by breaking the fall.
I can't do pushups. I can barely do any curls, or lifts. So, now I'm riding but can't do anything to strengthen it. I've lost some range of motion, and forget about sleeping on my right side. The ache it brings on wakes me up everytime.
This injury is really bothering me, and I don't know how long for it to get better.
I have not gone to a Dr.

Get some surgical opinions from Doctors.

Had a recurring blow out on my left shoulder that ended my "career" lol in the early 80's. Had it repaired in '92 and it's been great since.ymmv

Well this blows. . It's deffinetly not lose. I have it in a sling now. Only way I can move it is if I move slow and use my other hand to move it. I will see a ortho asap. Just trying to get home now . Note to self stick shift and Moto is a big No ! Lol. They gave me pain meds but I have not taken any yet. Do to driving.

Ouch!! sorry to hear crashing sucks.
I have recently went down hard on my left arm/shoulder and ruptured my rotator cuff pretty bad been out for two months now and still having difficulty raising my arm above shoulder level without pain .Probably another 2 months to get back to right but i'm 59 so i expect it to heal slower just trying to use it more everyday and do the exercises the doc prescribed.
I have a good Chiropractor who also does Acupuncture/Acupressure, Electrical Stimulation, Ultrasound, and Muscle and Joint therapies so he is bringing me along pretty quickly.

Find a good one if you don't have one already who doe's these practices and you will heal much faster.

Every MX rider should have a good Chiropractor in their program.

A buddy of mine had that dislocation and it broke his scapula as well. That's a bad one, but the good news is they can fix you up if necessary.

I had 6 anterior dislocations and eventually got the surgery to correct the joint (it was getting so loose that it came out a few times without even crashing.) After my surgery and rehab it's never come out again.

I was so bummed to see you in the sling Jeff!

These are not the best videos, but this is some of what I've been doing everyday for the last 6 months.
Shoulder Strech
Shoulder Exercise 1
Shoulder Exercise 2

Like these other guys said, the strong you make your shoulder and the tighter, the less risk of a second episode.

Let it rest as long as needed or doc says. Then you could use pt to get range and strength back. If you don't have prior dislocations then you could be fine. If you try to start using it prematurely then it will become more likely to dislocate again and again and again and require surgery. Find a good doc/surgeon and follow orders. Good luck and heal up.

I dislocated my left anterior in 2014. I ride, but the shoulder still has pain. Went back to ortho last month and diagnosed with labrum tear. Going to ride it out for now. Get. well.

It's been one month since I yard saled and injured my shoulder. Terrible pain. No ROM. Weak. Had x rays the following Monday. Nothing broke and nothing dislocated. Strangely, it felt so much better than I thought it would 3 days later. Waited another week and a half to see how it felt on it's own. Was still very sore, popping and clicking and pinching. Had an MRI. Holy shit. Page and a half worth of damage to include: rotator cuff tear, labrum tear, numerous mild tears in ligs and tendons, displaced bicep tendon, muscle sprain and bone contusion. I thought long and hard about my path forward and scheduled a surgery for 20 June (today). However, a week ago, I called the doc office and said I was going to postpone it to a later date, like in the fall, before the weather gets shitty. It feels good enough to use it as a functioning arm, despite the laundry list of damage. I was going to tell them I was just going to roach it out until winter. At that time, they told me my insurance company would likely not cover the surgery until I had done 6-8 weeks of non surgical treatment. I would have been more pissed if that didn't fall in line with what I had planned. So I got a script for a month of PT, doing band work and have been diligent in doing it for a week. Rode yesterday for the first time. Was able to ride comfortably at about 60-70 percent. I'm 35, and have exercised my entire life and have a decent build. I have recently read\learned that apparently this makes a big difference in injury prevention and recovery. not looking forward to the 6 months of hell when I do get the procedure done though. Good luck OP.

I am in pretty good shape. I think that helps a lot. I have broke the scapula on that side before but never a dislocation . As for initial pain this was worse than when I broke the clavicle and scapula . But after they got it back in it does not really hurt much just when I move it and have no strength. . I will let it rest and as soon as I can start rehab I will go 100 percent. Just one of those years were its been 1 injury after another . I 100 percent honestly hoped they could pop it I and I could have got back and raced my 2nd Moto. I think that was my thinking after 150mg of fetnayl

Do not ignore and think, you can rehab it.
I've had both shoulders done one in 2008 the other side in January this year. In 08 mine too was a posterior dislocation and the dr at er kept trying multiple times to pop it in. By the time I went in for surgery my labrum was destroyed and NOT repairable . MRI did not show destroyed labrum only when doc got in there he saw it. I was out for almost 2 years until shoulder got good enough to ride and race again BUT it is weak, there is nothing I can do about it

I dislocated my left shoulder 12+ times. I rehabbed and rehabbed after the first one but some people just cant recover if the labrum is slightly torn. I ended up having a bankart repair (labrum) and I pushed hard for the bone block. (they cut of the coracoid or however you spell it and screw it to the joint so it cant dislocate. A posterior dislocation is a lot different and a lot more painful, harder to get in. This injury is no joke and if you don't take care of it now will be a nightmare when your older. The bankart repair is a sissy fix for that problem. Its built for tennis players. Just ask adam cincarulo that. Make sure you rehab it every day, 4-5 times when your cleared to do it by the doc.

Not messing around with this at all . I am very good with emergency care. Just not really up on long term care and I am my worst patient . . Thank you everyone for the support just to add salt to the wound I got road rash pretty much my entire arm and part of my shoulder and back were my chest protector was not .

Expect a year to a year and a half before you really feel normal. That does not mean you will be off the bike for a year, but it does take that amount of time to recover. Also, if you don't plan to pitch for the Yankees in your future, keep the shoulder tight as apposed to getting 100% range in it. That might sound dumb, but I ended up getting two shoulder surgeries for that reason. Keep your head up. It really is not bad, and things get easier.

Heal up! My advise is to see your primary care doc and get a referral to an mri/ and see a specialist. Like said above, doc may gave you 2 options, rest and avoid activities for a long time, ir have surgery. I've been both routes and the surgery is the way to go. Less recovery time, and it worked. Resting didn't work as I never got the stability back, and i needed the surgery anyway.... my opinion: it was a waste of of time, if given an option get the surgery, and be religious on the PT.

Ps, I'm not sure of your severity, but I had repeted dislocations, leading to chronic instability and several lesions on the labrum I'm both shoulders.
I am also only 26, so if you are older definitely get the surgery as it may be an even longer recovery time.

How did the recovery go? Still riding? I just got my shoulder jacked up like two days ago. Honestly concerned it's going to affect my riding.

I dislocated one at a race and took 2-3 months off to get the strength back and it to feel tight. Dislocated the other one years later playing softball. I got advice from my orthopedic doctor on how to tape it up and ran a half marathon two weeks later. Dislocating your shoulder is probably the worst pain I’ve every experienced.

Let your should heal.

Do work when the pain is gone to build the muscles up strong.

If it does feel “loose” then you are ok to be back to normal.  If it starts feeling loose it would be good to get a MRI and have some see if anything is torn.

Theres a great chance for 100% recovery, but every situation is different.

I lost track of how many times my shoulder dislocated. So many times just getting out of bed it popped out and I leaned over and pulled down on my wrist to pop it back in. Finally went to doctor and he did an old school Bristow repair where they cut off the nub of bone the muscle and pulled it tight and put a screw in to reattach and its been fine ever since and its been 40+ years
