Not even close would be my guess. And I don't mean the 450 wasn't even close to as fast as the 500.

I'm surprised he put that much money and effort into the KX 500 but still stuck with the steel frame and old school layout. Why not go AF?

Yeah, maybe because the 450 class is much more competitive? Ever think of that?

Not all guys prefer the stiffness of the AF frames. Some guys prefer the flexibility of the older steel frames. But besides that , I don't think Sean was looking to go out and race a $15,000.00 modded , AF type bike. I think he wanted to do it old school style , and besides he freakin' rips on that thing!

Because it's way cooler the way it is.

I asked at the time, Gibby said there weren't any transponders on the two stroke race bikes I believe?

Today at Red Rocks MX (a private track that ET3 considers to be his fave) there was a brand spanking new KX500AF. Dude was riding it proper too. This is a deep sandy track where you will take as much hp as you can get.

The 2-strokes rode a slightly shorter track at GH. After the 2-stroke race was finished (Friday) the track was re-routed to include the full track, so lap times can't be compared apples to apples.

But he rode both the National and the Invitational on Saturday. Those were the same track, no?

Yes on Saturday it was the same track, I was thinking somebody wanted to compare laptimes from Friday to Saturday with 2 different track lengths.

I forgot there was the FMF invitational on saturday, (still probably hung-over from Friday night)

In the 500 class he cleared out and had a lot of clear track in front of him, in the 450's he had a lot more competition with little/no clear track, that and that the track lengths were different means you cannot compare them at all.

Both bikes are sick, in their own way.

Why would he want to go with that inferior technology? A steel frame just won the SX championship and is currently leading the outdoor championship. Wink

Collier talked about this on the Pulp show a few weeks ago, the bike belongs to his dad who used to ride it in the desert. It had been in the garage gathering dust for a few years and they broke it out and did some work to make it raceable. There was no intent to build a high dollar project bike.

The video of him at Day In The Dirt made me an instant Collier fan. Not being a SoCal guy, I had no idea who he was...but being a huge Wardy fan, anybody that could ride a KX500 like that (scrubbing jumps and such) had my vote right away! Smile

All that aside, I'll bet that although the 500 is probably faster in a 1/4-mile run...the 450F is probably capable of turning lower lap times because of the tractibility advantage. I imagine a lot of the time with the 500 is spent keeping the rear tire hooking up, instead of lighting up.

I actually did think about that -- it might be better as far as vibration with that big 2T mill. But steel frame or not, I'm just thinking those '88 ergonomics have to be a handful!

I was just throwing it out there. It has been a long time since I rode it but I did ride a KX500 that was an ex team green bike from that era. It wasn't bad at all and it was a lot better than the Service Honda CR500AF that I have ridden.

Damn it man! Lap times! ..we need lap times!
I timed him at the two stroke race at the Glen Helen round for 3 laps and then compared it to the live timing in the AMA 450 race and he averaged 3-4 seconds a lap faster on "The Beast"

He rides that 500 really well and it is an absolute rocket up the hills.

He should have rode the 500 in the National...........oh wait that bike is banned from those races......too bad, it would bring some excitement to them. Shocked
