I'm trying to get a bike again, but I'm restricted budget wise, so I'm looking at second hand.
I was shocked to see the price disparity between two strokes and four strokes on the second hand market.
I've seen people asking in excess of 3 k for 2002 model YZ 250 2 ts ...it's nuts! So hard to find a post 2006 model yz250 2t for less than 5 k.
Yet there is an abundance of late model four strokes for well under 4 k. I'm not a four stroke guy but the best deal I've spotted so far is a very clean 2006 YZ 250 f for 2.5 k....that's about 1 to 2 k cheaper than heaps of beat up 2002 to 2005 two strokes... That's the way it seems to be here in Australia, is it similar in other countries?
I was hoping to find a good YZ 250 2 t for under 3 k to use as a practice bike before I buy a new bike early next year.
It's really crazy here....they are asking as much or more for brand new 2016 YZ 250 2 t's than they are for brand new 2016 450's. Seems to be saying something that the manufacturers should be listening to

Its regional in the states. There are yz250 2t's in my area going between 1200 for a decent 01 to 2800 for a really clean '11 model right now.

New to vital but long time lurker. PJRAUS I understand what you're saying. 4 strokes are awesome....but when they go or when they need a rebuild it costs a fortune. I was on one for a long time, I knew it was close to needing an overhaul. I sold it, bought a 2016 KTM 300 2 stroke. For a working class guy like me I just can't afford the parts to rebuild a 450. Not to mention labor, or my labor. And i'm a mechanic! The reliability, cost, & fun factor swayed me back to a 2 stroke. Only 3.5 hours on the bike but I have fallen in love with riding all over again.

It's pretty rad actually, I bought a 03 rm125 in 2005 for 2.5k, sold it last month after 10 years of use for 3k. Thinking about unloading my other smokers after that. It's a sellers market.

Same here in so cal. People want high dollar for some beat up bikes. I was able to score a clean 04 rm 125 for $1,400 from a buddy, i got lucky. 9ne of my good friends just sold his 08 crf450 for 2,500 and the best deal he could find for a clean 250 2 stroke was a '06 yz250 for $2,500.

Here you buy a beater for $1500 and put $$ into it, or buy something in okay shape for $3000 that is 10-12 years old. Not much of an in-between when searching the for sale ads.

Bottom line is I wouldn't buy a used 4 stroke. Unless you seriously know the guy you're buying it from....like a riding buddy. You'll never know how it was treated or maintained. Unless he has records from a reputable dealer. This is hard to come by. I've noticed a trend in "flipping" bikes. I just don't trust people anymore. Get a used smoker, put a little $ in her, make her your own. Then ride the hell out of her Wink

I bought an 06 RM 250 brand new for $4000 otd in Past Robles. That's what they're going for all over the US

Look at the price of a new smoker. YZ125 is $6400 & $72300 for a 250

'06 YZ250F for $2,500? I saw '14 KXF450s listed under $4000 last winter when I was looking to sell my '13. $2,500 seems high. I agree that people are crazy about their 2 stroke pricing. I'm not trying to buy one, but it's so ridiculous that it actually kind of bothers me. Laughing

Ahh no... A new 2016 YZ 250 two stroke is $ 10 k to 10.5k here.... There is a new 2015 on bikes sales site for $9 k at the moment...still too much money for a bike that is the same as an 06 model.
The 2017 ktm 450 will likely be in the vicinity of 13 k.
Spotted a 2008 YZ 250 2 t for 3 k.....it's the only sensible price I've seen so far but I'm suspicious of its quality.
Anyway I won't have the money I need for another month or so, so I will see how things look then

That's AUD, we get stiffed here big time by the manufacturers. Even a couple of years ago when $ 1 AUD was worth
$1.10 USD they were still asking in excess of 11 k for a new 450 at rrp.
They figure we can pay more here in Australia so I they jack the prices right up

Hey man my '16 KTM was $10.331 when it was said and done. BUT......at least it's not the exact same bike from what.....10 years ago or so. Christ Yamaha is still putting painted pipes on the bikes.

That just tell me that the 450 would've been like 12k. Plus 2k to rebuild the top end. And it's a company that's investing in the 2 stroke. Not running a decade old engine, putting out their version of an off road bike in an attempt to get a piece of a pie they and the rest of the others have been missing out on. Kinda reminds me of domestic beers noticing a dent in their sales due to a superior product. I'm sure some of you can understand that analogy.

Some people just crack me up ...on eBay here, a 2016 YZ 250 f with 6.9 hours and not a mark on it , add says " only ridden in prime conditions, never in mud " and the photos show a showroom looking bike....all good but the price? $9.4 k!!! http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=282069676602&globa…
Did this person not see the ad on eBay for a brand new ( dealer bike ) 2016 YZ 250 f special edition ( yellow version ) for $ 9k?? http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=252421002589&globa…

I'm pretty sure it's a girl that owns it, I might ring her up just to tell her She!s dreaming!
I haven't bought a second hand bike since the late 80' s I've always had new bikes , somewhere near 30 of them I'd say, always sold them for not much money, even in fantastic condition, I always found my old bikes difficult to sell.
As I sit here on a cold wet Saturday, bike shopping for a decent and affordable second hand bike , I am both amused and annoyed by what I'm seeing

That's a nice looking bike and a smart buy, unfortunately here..people are asking close to 4 k for bikes that age..crazy stuff!
I would love to be able to find a bike that good for that sort of money....that would make a perfect practice bike

Dam! Seems like hard times for 2t's in AUS. I guess they've herd about the revolution! Hope you can come up on a good deal for your practice bike.

Side note... I personally love the steel frame yz's rather than the aluminum. Just my opinion.
