Riders who landed big deals and failed to live up?

Edited Date/Time 12/23/2014 10:30pm
I hope this isnt in too bad taste (the original title was gonna be 'the worst riders to land big contracts' if this helps to jog your memories for a reply) but we need a shake up from all the Bubba threads & after being a member on here for a while now i know most of us are very opinionated and open so i thought id ask the question.

Who would you say fits the bill?

I was always left feeling a bit deflated with Chris Gosselaar when he was a t pro circuit, but then i just checked his results and were talking top ten, but this for a pro circuit rider isnt really good right? so thats my reasoning. nothing against the guy.

James Stewart (depending who you talk to)

He was supposed to go undefeated for 10 seasons straight....

As much as I HATE to say it, when it comes to racing, Pastrana on big bikes..... He had so much potential on the track but just could not stay healthy. He is however, a god in the moto world.

I agree with you on that. He won lites class but couldn't pull it together on big bikes

I think Ron Lechien could have been so much more had he waited 5 or 6 years longer to start partying.

125K a year, which at the time was big money but in reality is not much.

This is actually a really good question. The answers seem obvious, but when you think about it some of the people listed were long shots to live up to their contracts and other's may have actually out-performed their contracts.

Vuillemin on the BooKoo Honda team - certainly was a big deal from a money perspective.

Jake Weimer, Austin Stroupe, so far Adam Ciancirulo, jimmy Decotis got to ride for Geico for I think 2 years and only got to ride a few races due to injuries. Hasn't got any deals since. Sucks because he's fast enough

And you can't forget the biggest, amateur superstar suppose to dominate and shock the world....Mike Alessi

I think Chris Gosselaar went as far as he could with the talent he had. I don't think he was ever made up to be a superstar.

This is a tough subject because injuries derail lots of guys. Also, equipment can derail guys also, not so much now but years back it did. Look at Brian Swink on Suzuki? If he was on a CR250 at his peak, who knows what would have happened.

I'm not sure about contracts but I remember being excited to see Billy Laninovich and Shane Bess race. Neither one of them made the transition very well.

Charlie Bogard, John Kitsch, Brian Swink IMO

IMO, RV over performed. He just had 1 LL c'ship coming in to the pros.

James Stewart. I said it. Love the guy, but he hasn't come close to winning a championship in a long time while getting paid big.

I know he's getting paid for more than to just win championships, but from a performance standpoint I think he's got to make the list.

Completely disagree on Hahn. In my opinion (and I mean this as a compliment), Wil has already exceeded expectations. I'll admit that I'm a huge Wil fan.

Oh geez here we go! The OP said "failed to live up"

James has 7 c'ships and 116 wins! Yea, that's a pretty shitty career!Dry

I'm gonna say Millsaps. I know he was good in '13 but I still think for the hype and contracts this guy has had, I expected more. Maybe '15 will be great for him, but he's been around a long time and I don't see him filling RV's void or anything at this point in his career.

Stew has obviously been a big success by most standards, but compared to RC and MC who I feel he was expected to replicate, he hasn't delivered the same level of dominance. I feel that the 2010 YZF and his inability to adjust to it sort of sidetracked his career at it's peak and he's not been close to a championship since. It's interesting to think what would have happened if he'd stayed on Kawi after 2008 or maybe switched to Suzuki a season or two earlier.
