Who runs the red plate now? I know tomac and dungey are tied in points and technically both should run it. But they mentioned tomacs wins put him in 1st on the board. So does tomac run the red plate or is it in fact strictly off points?

Rules have both riders running it.

They're tied and will both don the red plate.

The tie breaker rule that would give Tomac the #1 occurs at the end of the season.

Which is more than a bit silly since obviously right now if the title ends Tomac wins...

No I thought they said Tomac runs it because he has more wins and yes I know if this was the last race of year the tie breaker goes to Tomac because he has more wins also.

For the fans it's cool to see 2 red plates, especially for those who don't really know what's going on.

If they aren't both running the red plate at the next race, then the rules need to be changed. A great opoortunity to accentutate this dramatic close to the 17 season, and would be a shame to waste it based on "rules". They're tied, and it would really rev up the next event to see them both with red.

Two red plates on the track is ridiculous, use the tie breaker rule and give it to the superior rider.

Tied = share the plate. It's not new, it's been the rule.

But it's not ending right now. And they're tied in points. I don't understand how that could possibly be seen as silly. Hypotheticals are silly.

They both run it I believe as others have said.

On another note, when they first introduced the Red plate for some reason I remember the previous champion running it, AND the current points leader if it was someone different. Is this accurate or am I completely making that up? It would have been around 2007-2008 ish that I'm thinking I remember this.

As i recall it the previous champ ran the red plate the entire season regardless of the point standing.

I think it's as late as 2012 or so they changed it to the current points leader running the red plate.
