Three or four weeks ago I was at work and my son, who we'll call "Jose" to protect his identity - texted me with a Creepslist classified Ad for a pretty ragged out appearing 1987 Honda CR250 . I had mentioned to "Jose" over the years that Id had one and raced one in the turbulent, rockin' nineties and, I believed it to be - the GREATEST motocross bike ever made and, I'd like to find me another, some fine day.... Anyway, I looked at the Creepslist (Craigslist perhaps, to you) link and something about the bike looked familiar, not like my old one, but more so like my buddy "Roberto"s, that had been stolen from a storage rental shed, along with his 1991 Peak replica TooFiddy, about 8 years ago, I texted the link to Roberto, who had long moved out of state and, he texted back quickly -
You found MY BIKE !!!", and another friend, I'll call "Gonzo:, confirmed the same, It still had Roberto's 151 numbers on, which were, i believe due to his love for Bacardi 151 Rum....Anyhooo...the DUNLOP swingarm stickers were still on too, which I recall him plastering aboard,,, Roberto instructs me to call an old moto buddy, now cop, to follow up...which I do.... He says " dont attempt to contact the seller, let me handle it", which he did. The bike was in Athens, Ohio, about 1.5 hours from my moto ranch, so, yesterday, I got a cashier's check for $148.50. ( dont tell the wife, she still thinks spending money on motocross bikes is extremely silly) - and handed it to the Athens Sheriff Department and they took me to a secret location ( ok, it's over by the fairgrounds) and I loaded up the bike, the loose cylinder, PC pipe and kickstarter and started on home. Oh yeah, the sheriff has told me that a buyer was on his way to pick up the bike from the seller- from South Carolina and, was into Ohio, when the seller instructed that the bike had been seized. The seller and his dad were not arrested as the cops believed this was like the 4th owner since it has been ripped off. Got the bike home last night, Roberto says to me you and JOSE keep the bike, restore it, let me try it out when I come to town, which sounds fine. Needs a carb, a kickstart shaft, cylinder, etc, but we shall restore it, just so badass to see an '87 in Rupert's Garage.Cheerios, mates.
